D2 is a new boarding junior. At her prior public HS you can take AP sciences without having taken the subject before, but at her BS you need to have taken a year. We finessed her into IB chemistry by having her study with some tutoring over the summer, but they wouldn't let her into AP without having done lab work before. She wants to take AP bio senior year and they are saying she needs the equivalent of a HS bio course with labs over the summer. Any suggestions for a residential program for 2-4 weeks in July? At the moment we are considering CTY.

CTY is a good option. My D enjoyed all the courses she took there. You could also try a summer program at boarding schools like A and E. Maybe a community college intro bio course would work? By the way, AP Bio is a real challenge!

Alternatively, she could try out in a local college/graduate school. Many biology professors are short on grants and would love to have an eager high school student as an unpaid intern. It would be less structured but if she’s willing to spend a summer or two, she could learn about current, real-life issues and the experience would make her look good in her college application if she’s going to be a science major.

Northfield Mount Hermon offers summer courses: http://www.nmhschool.org/summer-program.

Thanks, folks. I just sent in the registration stuff for CTY. Intensive course does the entire thing in 3 weeks (which is about what she has free between school service trip and working at camp!)
