Hi
our D has got an opportunity to become a teacher's aid in a summer school program -teaching math & science for 10th&11th. We were planning to send her a summer camp at a college this year. D thinks working is better for her ( for building a resume & getting refernce wise) . Financially this looks good-she gets paid for the job . She has never gone for any camps .All her classmates are doing multiple college based camps to increase their chances.
What do you think ? thanks in advance

Either look great for college…the job will probably look better, honestly. If you can afford either, let her do what she wants.

I agree with your daughter. It looks great to have a paying job on her resume, especially in an academic field like teaching.

Unless the college-based camp is something very unusual or highly selective, the job is probably better.

college based camp is usual garden variety one-" summer enrichment program for highschoolers" -nothing special.but when we heard everyone is doing camps this year ,we put her into the least expensive one .

“but when we heard everyone is doing camps this year ,we put her into the least expensive one”

Wouldn’t you rather she stand out from the crowd, as she’s applying to colleges? The job will look great.

We came from Europe 18 months ago. Her resume is not that extensive. She did not do many extra curricular activities over there ,compared to many of her classmtaes. we thought it was safe to follow her peers in terms of summer cativities . I guess you are right -it is okay to be different.

Have her take the job. College based camps aren’t going to increase anyone’s chances unless they’re really selective.

I would let her take the job. I’d much rather my kid go to a college that appreciated his work ethic rather than his parents ability to fork over the money for camp.

Also, good job on raising a responsible kid.

I would go for the job. Most kids with money could go to a college camp/summer school. But it shows leadership and maturity to teach and to hold down a job. It probably also shows your kids is very intelligent to be a tutor. All of those things are good for college applicationa and future job search.

A friend asked me if his son should do an unpaid advertisement internship or be a paid swim coach at their club. I voted for the the swim coach job because it takes a lot of skills to be a good swim coach - motivation, leadership, organization, dedication…

My daughter was a tutor in HS. She made a lot of money from it, but she also gained a lot of experience from it.
