Summer Choice?

This coming summer (2011) I have the choice of either joining a drum corps (DCI), which is something that I've wanted to do since middle school (but haven't been talented enough to audition until now), or applying for a summer internship for mechanical/aerospace engineering. Both will most likely require the entire summer, so doing both won't be possible. I am in my sophomore year and haven't really done any work/research that is related to my field of study. This is mainly because I just switched majors this year (so this is my first year taking ME classes).

I was wondering what you guys would do if you were in my shoes. Would joining the drum corps be suicide for future grad school/job applications? Or would doing research and internships the following semesters/summers balance this out?

Any help and advice would really be appreciated.

The question is, do you have to pledge to the drum corps RIGHT now?
Since you are applying to the internship RIGHT now, meaning you will either get accepted, or rejected…
You can apply to both now? But if you have to committee to drum corps once you sign up, then obviously you can’t apply to the internship simultaneously.

You’re right I do have to apply for both (and may not get in either). I’m just saying worst (or best) case scenario, if I get into the corps, and get the internship that I want, I wouldn’t know what to do.

Is this one of those choices that would really depend on me, or is the internship the obvious choice?

Both. I can’t answer the graduate part because I am only a sophomore.
But like I said, you should find out. It’s more preferable not to break promise at all cost
You should find out whether the sign up require any commitment at all. I think the drum corps might be the case.
