Summer CS research internship (SULI at Los Alamos vs. Sandia National Labs)

Hi all,

I recently got into the Department of Energy's SULI program (Summer Undergrad lab internship) for a comp sci research spot at Los Alamos. I also got a seperate research offer for the summer at Sandia National Labs. Both are in New Mexico. I'm trying to decide between the two.

So my questions for anyone who knows is: 1. How prestigious/competitive is the SULI program? 2. Which lab is more prestigious?

Thanks a lot!

Hello,

I received a SULI internship two summers ago at Los Alamos, and plan on completing a second one this summer. Both labs (sandia and los alamos) will be approximately equal in prestige, so I HIGHLY recommend making your decision based on which research advisor does research you find more interesting. A poor adivsor for a summer will make you wish you were doing most anything else.

If you have contacted both of them for details about their projects, and what they specifically would like you to work on, and one sounds better than the other than I would opt for that one. (If you haven’t done this, their emails should be on your acceptance email, and you should start with this). If one seems to have a much clearer definition of what he/she would like you to do, I recommend choosing that one over the other, even if it is a bit less interesting. Having an advisor with a good set of goals, and a hands on attitude, makes all the difference.

Best of luck, let us know what you decide. Maybe I’ll see you in Los Alamos!
