Musicprnt,

Thanks for the insider information. Surely this forum sees plenty of posters who would not understand the distinction between a camp and a festival. I really do mean festival, per the direction of my daughter’s private teacher (an orchestra principal and conservatory teacher.) I do realize that Yellow Barn is a very tough admit. I trust her teacher to advise her whether or not to audition; my job is just to do the legwork to find out the age requirements.

Have you looked at sewanee summer music festival? I went last year. Minimum age to apply I believe is 12. They take high schoolers and college students. There are two orchestras, with college students and high schoolers integrated, but the top orchestra is primarily college. Seating is done on a weekly basis. First week I was principal of the lower, then I moved up. Some notable rep from last year for cumberland (lower group): Chabrier Espana, Carmen suite (I played principal), march from damnation of faust, navarro libertadores, marquez tango con fuego. Sewanee (top group) played: fantasy on william tallis vaugh williams, pines of rome, brahms tragic overature, prokofiev romeo and juliet, marriage of figaro (i played 2nd), the planets (entirety, i played bass oboe), rachmaninoff symphonic dances, & bela fleck’s concerto for banjo and orchestra (w/bela fleck, i played english horn). There are also weekly chamber concerts.

Thanks guineagirl96,

I’ll have to look into Sewanee.

Eastern Music Festival states a minimum age as 14 but will make exceptions, particularly for strings. Their wind players do skew older, but it’s worth asking them. Your dd would have to be prepared for a mix of younger high school to college age musicians, but there are some fabulous opportunities, if geography is not an issue (all the places you’ve mentioned are in the Northeast except Interlochen; EMF is in Guilford SC).

Thanks, listenmissy. We’re in the Mid-Atlantic, so it doesn’t matter too much if we go up or down the coast. Last summer she did one camp in Maine and one in Charleston, SC. I emailed the contact person at EMF, who seems very friendly and helpful and said they’d be happy to consider her for this year. Hard to say what her chances of getting in would be, but I don’t see any harm in her auditioning.

A few years ago my daughter’s non musical friends asked her what she was doing for the summer and she replied, “Oh, I’ll be at music festivals all summer.” They were shocked/impressed/found new respect for a classical music nerd. ;)
