Summer Financial Aid Available????

Hi. Just wanted to see if anyone had advise or knowledge re: a question related to summer school. My son is enrolled in a private univ but is planning to go to summer school @another institution close to home for this summer. He gets financial aid through his regular school for fall/spring semesters (fed/state grants & univ SCHLR). Are federal & state grants avail for summer school as well? I read an article that fed grants were given for summer terms in the past but govern. was considering eliminating this program, I just can't find anything that truly confirms this though. Also, are their other programs out there that may be avail to help assist w/the cost? do colleges typically give need-based SCHLR to visiting students for the summer? I would think not, but didn't know for sure. As you can see summer sessions are new to us so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Students must be enrolled in a regular, degree granting program to be eligible for financial aid. Visiting students are not aid eligible. That said, some schools will allow you to get aid in the summer even though technically they should not … but that will dip into the amount available for the fall/spring, so it’s not a wise thing to do. You only get a certain amount of Pell and Stafford to last the whole year. Use some in summer & you’ll be out of luck come January.

Thanks Kelsmom for your reply. I was afraid that would be the case about the Pell & Stafford and the lack of assistance for summer sessions. His max for the two definately gets used up between Fall & Spring, with nothing left over. I guess we’ll need to somehow choke up the money for the summer term. Thanks again!
