Thanks I didn’t realize. My daughter is also in an expensive city and doesn’t seem to have a problem.
I looked yesterday! It is especially tough to find continuous time over a couple of months.
I was going to say that this student might have to stay at 2 (3?) different Airbnb’s, which is annoying.
Honestly it is really difficult to arrange even that. Airbnb’s are really busy and they are also really expensive. A few years back I found one in Salem, for two months: that is a train and subway ride away. There was a studio for $2600 that usually isn’t available, in Somerville. Like I said, slim pickings and costly.
My older daughter has friends who are staying in airbnb’s on the West Coast and moving around after a few months. They plan on doing the same in the Northeast and I told them the same thing.
You could check Facebook marketplace for Boston/Cambridge/Somerville/Allston-Brighton - they sometimes have folks posting sublets. Most student housing is in one of those 4 areas - for MIT Allston-Brighton, Cambridge & Boston are closest. The neighborhoods in these areas are all safe, if that is a concern.
Both my kids have used craigslist successfully for roommate situations, as have I.
I didn’t realize Boston was that hard, but it makes sense. My kid is in a very desirable area of NYC and hasn’t had any problem, but it seems that it varies depending on the city.
I spent some time looking at Airbnb last night. Most of those options are super expensive. Not paying $6000/month. Lol. There were some for more like $2600/month but he can do better at some of the dorm options if there is space. Still not cheap - around $2000/month. He was excited about his summer salary and I just told him he will need every penny. Lol.
Still making more calls today. You’ve all been very helpful!
Has your son reached out to HR at the internship company? They may be able to make suggestions on housing.
Great suggestion.
Roommates ! Only way to affordability unless a dorm room can be secured at low cost.
One of his current roommates has an internship in Boston but got it a while ago and already put a deposit down for a dorm room. S looking at same dorm but likes some other dorms too. True that he could somehow advertise at school, too, and see if anyone else is headed there for summer and needs a roommate. I can have him ask his hiring company too.
Very late to the party here, but if you are still looking I would be happy to search the BC parents page for you. Parents are often posting sublets for their student.
Aw Thank you! he decided to suck it up and stay in one of the university dorms that offer housing to students with internships. It’s pricey but close to work. I’ll hit you up next summer if he’s back again!
Glad to hear he has it sorted out! S20 lived in the dorms at nyu for his first internship. It was pricey, but it really was the best option. Good luck to your son! He will love living in Boston - It is a great place for young people!!
I agree! I’m jealous!
