Should a student accept a second summer internship with the same company or branch out and look at other options and companies?

I think it depends. If the two jobs are very different and offer distinct experiences then it’s definitely worth branching out. More networking, more references, and unique experiences.

The advantages of working at the same company are better opportunities for networking and obtaining a full time position within that company and it looks good on your resume that your employer wanted to rehire you/shows loyalty.

After completing a second internship at a federal defense contractor this summer, I was offered a full time position with the company. I have one year until I graduate and I am guaranteed a job once done.

If you had a great experience with your first internship and can see yourself starting your career there, then go for a second one. It all depends on how you feel.

Thanks for the comments…my daughter was lucky enough to snag an internship freshman year and now is looking at a co op. She isn’t sure she wants to stay with the same great company, or branch out. Needs to let them know in October, long before she would know anything final about a co op. Do you think she would burn the bridge by trying another company in the future? Would they still consider her for full time in 3 years if she turned down the offer now? As a sophomore, she is not sure she wants to work there full time yet…big decision to make so early in her academic career.
