I'm a college sophomore (biology major, pre-med) looking for a summer science/research internship somewhere on the east coast (preferably in Massachusetts). The problem is, though, that I'm really hoping to find one that is for less than 10 weeks. I want to apply to some music festivals up in Maine and New Hampshire this summer and couldn't possibly do those if I were participating in a 10-week program (which most of them are). Can you recommend any that would fit for me?

I know about Woods Hole and have done some searches online (I'm thinking about the Wyeth program in Cambridge), but I'm just wondering if any of you can recommend some. I'd really like some research experience.

How about working with a prof. at your university? It is possible that you can do an independent study or thesis with the prof. later so the 6-8 week investment can be built upon later. I think it would be very difficult to get a paid research internship for 6-7 weeks. Most PIs would feel that you would only be scratching the surface and observing rather than engaging in any meaningful research activities. If you are a top student, perhaps you could convince a PI at a medical school you would be interested in volunteering for one summer and then returning the next. Again, your summer work this year would be an investment to future research work, and would make you more attractive as a candidate.

pmyen's idea is good. If you want to do research, then do it with a professor with whom you can continue into the school year. It's just very hard to accomplish anything in research in 6-7 weeks.
