Summer Jobs

Any ideas?Past experiences. Not looking to work fast food. I am 16y/o

yeah, I'm interested about this one too. I'm also 16 years old, and a rising junior. I'm currently thinking of opening a Japanese tutoring probram by myself, and tutor kids who are taking Japanese class in a local college and/or kids who want to learn Japanese. I've never done tutoring so I'm thinking of charging only like $4 to $6 per hour. But I wonder this plan would ever work...

Oh, and I should've get a car lisence earlier...

Charge more than that! That's barely minimum wage. You're doing a job that involves knowledge! Charge at least $15!!

well, I'm going to charge more later on. But first, you gotta attract people with lower price, and then, raise the price later on. That's my business philosophy...

Well, I've never done anything businessy before, so I can't say anything. But should I charge more, even though I have no idea how to do stuffs? But yeah, 4-6 might be too low... at least, I think I should charge from $7.05 (Oregon's minimum wage... I'm not sure whether that's the exact amount or not).

People don't like the "bait and switch" tactic. People are also generally wary when something seems too cheap. "If it's too good to be true, it probably is." Even at $15 an hour you're charging a ton less than the big test prep companies. I think I calculated a private Kaplan tutor was like $90/hour or something.

Wow, thanks for an advice, ExRunner. Have you ever done tutoring before?

No but I think I'm going to try this coming school year. I used to pay attention and research a lot of business type stuff when i was younger though which is where most of that is coming from.

Well I love my job, I work with a construction company, I get paid so much for moving ladders from one side of a house to the other, digging holes, putting up fences, cutting wood, etc. 10 dollars per hour, I made 70 bucks today!

don't short change yourself. 4-6 dollars is below minimum wage in most states. you want to build a relationship w/the person you are tutoring, you don't want to deceive them and charge a little upfront and then hike the price later...you'll end up losing people, after having made very little. $15 is extremely reasonable.

NWLover, the minimum wage is 7.25, I believe.

I've been trying to find a job, though I haven't found a place yet. The library sounds fun to work at, though. Perhaps that's mainly because I'm an organization and order freak, but whatev. =P

swgrad: alright, if I do, I'll go with somewhere around $15.

allypoo: Oh, library sounds a good place to work... except I wonder there are job openings in my public library... I know they hire a lot of volunteers though.

any other people who are doing summer job (yeah, I know, this isn't my thread but I'm curious)?

the minimum wage is 7.25 in some states?!

that's still more than I make right now...

Reason #33 why I ♥ Oregon! =P

Except the library is going to only be open about 20 hours a week soon...grr!
