I'm currently a junior BME undergrad. I didn't get accepted into any of the summer REUs I applied for and haven't heard back from any company internships yet. Can anyone suggest something I can do over the summer to give me some kind of engineering experience? I'm getting very worried. Thanks.

Did you talk to your profs about having a problem finding a place?
Maybe a nonpaying research position they know about.

I’m working for a past professor now as a research assistant which I can continue with over the summer, but I don’t use any engineering skills. I just do mostly computer work like running a program and recording results or editing spreadsheets. I occasionally code in matlab. I feel like I’m not gaining any useful experience.

If nothing else, you could look for someone to shadow and try to get your foot in the door. Also, it is not too late for REUs, but search broadly.
