Hello,
My granddaughter is a strong student 2016- seeking admissions to HYPS -
She's looking for a course/program with punch power this summer in Journalism.
I thought of Brown or Cornell summer school taking a class or two.

Generally speaking, HS students taking courses or summer programs at high powered schools just means their parents have money - it does little to nothing for admission to HYPS. Quite frankly, going out and breaking a news story as a HS student would be far more impressive to HYPS - they’re seeking students who will make a name for themselves and digging up a story and getting it published would indicate that ability far more than sitting in an Ivy classroom all summer.

Search for summer journalism programs for high school students–the kind she has to apply to get into, so it’s not just a demonstration of “we had money so we paid for classes.” If she can get into a competitive program and excel there, that is impressive. I attended such a summer program at UGA (I think it’s just for Georgia students) and won a journalism award that I put on my applications.

And just looking ahead, if she wants to be a journalist she should look at: Boston University, Syracuse, Northwestern, Mizzou. They’re always at the top of the rankings for undergraduate JO schools. HYPS don’t have notable undergraduate journalism programs (though Harvard certainly does have alumni connections in the industry, as it is Harvard).

I was going to suggest Northwestern’s summer program as well. Sure, these programs are “purchased opportunities” but the students I am aware of who went to NWU really loved it.

Can you tell me more about the summer program at Northwestern?
She is very gong-ho about ED at NWU – the only reason I hear is b/c older sibling is there.
