Summer program, or summer job?

I've never held a summer job, but I'm weighing that versus attending a summer program (Summer@Brown, Columbia's, one of Dartmouth's unaffiliated Rassias programs?) Which would look better on an application towards a very competitive school? (I.E. Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth...) I've attended plenty of summer programs in the past (CTD, Duke TiP) but I'm thinking a summer spent working at a summer camp or Hollister or something might look better on a resume? Your thoughts?

I think a summer job would look good. Personally, I would have gone for a summer job except that where I live, no one ever hires high school students >.> And from experience at Columbia, it isn’t very challenging or impressive looking. If you were just looking to have a good time, then yes i would suggest it. Otherwise, for padding your resume or something like that, probably not.

Anyone can get a job, but very few get into those programs.

Unless the job is a research position or something extraordinary, go with the program.
