Summer Programs 2008

notfromme, did you hear the Prokofiev?

Catbird-
The excerpts from Romeo and Juliet? Yes..those are the pieces that moved me the most. Absolutely beautiful, very enjoyable. And, not to harp on the setting, but it was in Kresge on a cool, beautiful summer night. And, if it wasn't a full house, it was very close. Kresge seats 4000. It is so impressive that so many come to see these kids. I saw that at all of the performances, and most in attendance were not parents. They were people visiting the area, coming to concerts on the weekend, or those lucky locals that have made this a Saturday and Sunday evening ritual. My d said that they were told about all of the visitors they get there, and the students will at times feel like they are part of an exhibit, like at a zoo!!!!

California Summer Music was a great experience for my composer son. He was in heaven having so much time to do nothing but compose - and to have musicians around of the caliber he needed to then perform his piece. The age range was 12-28 - the youngest composer was 16 - oldest were 28. The musicians and composers came from around the world: from conservatories, schools of music, and the post graduate world. The composers met once a day in a group, and had a private lesson every other day. The second week there was a guest composer (Gabriela Lena Frank.) The rest of the time they were on their own - including scheduling their own rehearsals. I would not recommend the camp for a beginning composer, or for someone who would like a multitude of other activities besides music - although the setting is lovely (Pebble Beach.) This is more of a monastic experience along the line of an artist's colony e.g. Yaddo or the MacDowell Colony where there is the intellectual vigor of like-minded souls but lots of space and time for creativity.

Putting in a plug here for the summer cello clinic at University of Missouri - Kansas City. DD attended this year and loved it - Prof. Enyeart is very engaging and accessible and the small size (limited to 25 students) allowed the opportunity for LOTS of one-on-one teaching and coaching. DD's only complaint is that it is only 10 days long.

Also plugging both the cello camp (2 wks) and chamber music camp (2 wks) at Illinois Wesleyan that she has attended in years past . . . Professor Nina Gordon is a great teacher and extremely enthusiastic.

I wanted to echo kbjesq - although my D's instrument is violin she's known several cellists (err celli?) who've attended the UMKC program - it's local for us and we've heard wonderful things about it for years. UMKC also has a terrific summer chamber program called Stringendo - 10 days too. My D loved it - and it was quite reasonable - same complaint about it being too short.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has heard anything - good or bad - about the orchestra and chamber programs at the Banff Center. I know they take only 3 basses for the orchestra, so it sounds tough to get into, but I don't know anyone who has gone - Does anyone know what the competition is like?
Thank you.

Hello, parents and students both,

Does anyone have any information on the effectiveness of the Dolora Zajick Institute for Young Dramatic Voices? I think it was held in Utah in both 2007 an 2008? I have a young baby dramatic soprano, but I am really protecting her voice. Any suggestions about a good program? Thank you.

Singing Mommy, my daughter's voice teacher is one of the main teachers at the institute for young dramatic voices. She is fantastic. I would trust anything she does. I can't say enough great things about her. My daughter doesn't happen to be a dramatic soprano, or you can bet we would be trying to send her. You should check out the program--I would imagine that it is excellent. As you probably know, all participants are tuition-free. Good luck!

I can't recommend the Zajick program enough. There is no place I know that is more nuturing for a young singer than here! My daughter has grown immensely through her two years with the program and can't wait for the summer to meet all the fabulous teachers and singers once again.

I have applied to Sewanee can anyone tell me about there experience there or how difficult it is to get in?

Does anybody have any experience with either of these two programs -- Miami at Salzburg and the Weimar Opera Summer Program?

What did you think of the IMIF music experience?

Can we please NOT resurrect these old threads? 99% of the time, the people who posted in them are no longer here, so one is not going to get answers from the original posters. It’s far better to start a brand new thread and let these old ones remain in obscurity; often the teachers at the programs are not the same, programs may not exist in the same format, any number of changes may have occurred after 6+ years.
@dutch18, try rephrasing your question and beginning a brand new thread and let’s see what comes of it!
