Summer Programs 2008

Washington National Opera - Education and Community Programs - Performance Training For Youth

binx - You're son's so lucky he can do Verbier! I wish I could try out for that one, but they don't take bass players! I'll definitely be trying out for Lucerne next year... but the rep is so different from what is required for all the other festivals, that it was just too hard to find time to record it this year, unfortunately.

does anyone know of any vocal programs for 18 or younger or 18 and older that are in the nyc area?

18 and older--Chautauqua Summer Institute--in upstate NY.But I think the
application deadline has passed. Auditions are this week at Julliard.

PATSY55: The deadline for that is on the 15th.

Does anyone know if NYSMF or Eastern Music Fest might give out college credit? I really want to go to one of those but my dad wants to have a program that has college credit (because he thinks its worth his money but he also wants me to have fun and love what I do).

If you go on the NYSMF website and download the brochure, I think there is mention of college credits in the back pages.

NYSMF • New York Summer Music Festival

I see that Interlochen has a jazz study option. Anyone know of other Summer programs that feature jazz performance?

NYSMF has a pretty extensive one.

I think Aspen does?

Instrument: Piano
Class: 2008 (College)

Festival Name: Music@Menlo
Program: Chamber Music
Location: Atherton, CA

Just applying to this one because I want to stay in the Bay Area this summer :)

We know some instrumentalists who worked at and attended the Eastern Music Camp (at Colgate). They were high school students but very much enjoyed the program.

Anybody have any experience in opera summer programs they would recommend? I have looked at the websites for Oberlin, CMU, University of the Arts, Notre Dame, Cinn Conservatory and Interlochen. Thanks.

Washington Opera has a pretty good program.

I just wanted to say that my daughter attended NYSMF's two week IFI (International Flute Institute) last year and loved it. The days were filled with private lessons and masterclasses. The staff was wonderful and she feels she did learn a lot. She was placed in the chamber orchestra and really enjoyed that also. The camp puts on concerts every weekend. Her summer started at another program that did not end up being as intensive or as competitive as she wanted, very disappointing musically, but loved the private teacher and the campus! It was a hard to leave the private teacher at the first camp, but we made to decision to pack up and take her to NYSMF. It was a great decision, and she may very well go back there this year. Just wanted to give this camp a plug....the kids seem to love it there. My d did not want to leave.

Hey,
Here's a list of all the ones I've applied for. Can anyone think of any others I might want to shoot for? I'm most interested in orchestra and chamber music programs.

-Aspen
-Tanglewood Music Center (fellowship)
-Pacific Music Festival
-Music Academy of the West
-Schleswig Holstein Orchestra Academy
-National Repertory Orchestra
-Britten Pears Orchestra
-Yellow Barn Chamber Music Program
-Zermatt Festival Academy

I really wanted to apply for Sarasota, NOI and Lucerne, but Sarasota and NOI start way too early for my school (I don't get out of school the second week of June), and I missed the deadline for Lucerne. Next year for that one.

Can anyone think of anything I'm leaving out?

Cosmos-
The International Festival-Institute at Round Top
National Symphony Orchestra: Summer Music Institute

I don't know if these dates work for you.

Wow, cool. I had never heard of the NSO one. That's awesome - Thanks for the suggestions.

Marrowstone Summer Music is a great option. It has renowned faculty and takes place in the whole music building of Western Washington Univeristy. It's a two week residential program where everyone stays in dorm rooms. There are a two orchestras and also chamber groups. They have a great fellowship program that if you're accepted will pay your whole tuition and board. Here is a link Marrowstone - A Summer Orchestra & Chamber Music Program for Young Musicians.

Cosmos - what instrument?

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions.
