MichaelNKat,
Thanks for the input. I thought someone might mention UArts. We’re right across the bridge from them, so we know the area, and, you’re right - we’d actually feel pretty comfortable with him there since we know it so well. I guess because we do know the area and his brother knows some in or graduated from the mt program, we’re sort of veering towards something not so close to home. But new is not necessarily better, so we’re continuing to explore UArts. Philly is the one city where we could easily feel a certain comfort level since we know it and would be nearby. Thanks for your thoughts - I think it could be a good option for his summer after sophomore year.

Can anyone offer information on the differences between impulse, nyu summer and oklahoma city summer programs?

mishin - I cannot comment on NYU’s summer program as my D never looked in to that one. As for the other two you mentioned:

Mpulse admissions were very competitive. The focus of the program was definitely on preparing for college auditions - every aspect including song and monologue choices, walking into a room, what to wear, resume, rep list, etc. The instruction was top notch. The kids were placed in appropriate dance classes, as there is no dance audition for this program. It was a lot of work and very challenging. There is a performance for families at the end of the three weeks. Training is excellent here! My guess is that the audition deadline has passed for Mpulse 2010, as I remember in-person auditions taking place in early March (meaning paperwork had to be in weeks earlier).

OCU’s musical theater program also had good training, but the main focus seemed to be on the production of a show (which was great). The kids take classes during the day (dance, voice, acting, etc) and have rehearsals for a show in the evenings. They also perform cabarets throughout the three week program. There were scholarships based on merit for this program, which was definitely a nice surprise. Dorms were awesome! Director was wonderfully supportive. My D wasn’t particularly challenged by the dance instruction here, but she has a lot a dance experience. This would be a great program for a rising junior. My daughter auditioned via DVD for this program.

Another excellent summer program is Carnegie Mellon. Although it was not audition based when my D attended, there were incredibly talented people who chose this program. It is a six week option that is a nice blend of audition preparation, performing (talent show, parent’s weekend, etc) and fun. My D felt that every class and lesson was immensely challenging and beneficial. She loved having free time to explore the area, go out to dinner, rehearse with friends, or get extra sleep. She felt that the instruction at Carnegie Mellon was very thorough, intense and extremely helpful. She loved the instructors and the program as a whole. Several weeks after the program ends, CMU sends a written report of things the student did well and things he/she needs to work on. It was very accurate and extremely helpful. They really knew my D well after this program! At the end of the six weeks, rising seniors actually do their real college audition for the CMU faculty, and rising juniors do a “practice” audition. Two seniors were accepted the year my D was there, and several who did not get in at that time chose to audition again later in the school year.

Hope that helps.

Are there others who have been accepted to and plan to attend CMU for the MT Pre-Drama program this summer (2010)? Is there a Facebook page for this group?
My D has been accepted and is still wavering between CMU and CITS. Any feedback on experience is welcome. Feel free to PM me, too.

While this doesn’t help with THIS year’s incoming participants, you did ask about feedback and experiences with CMU Pre-college and here is a link to three years’ worth of discussions by participants in this program. Would be good for your daughter to read through this and lots of experiences are discussed:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university-mt/205812-experiences-pre-college.html

Then, on a search of Facebook, there is a new group started called:
CMU Pre College Fine Arts 2010
However, it only has one person so far and he is a musician. So, you could keep an eye out there. However, I believe the CC thread I gave you the link to is going to be far more informative than any group that has not yet attended the program (though that is a good way to meet kids before arriving).

Here is new Workshop for people to consider: The Arts Edge

The unique nature of this program is the focus on college admissions, the audition, and the application process"

I know you can’t predict whether I get in or not, and I know that it’s really competitive, but what do you think my chances are at getting accepted to Cherubs for theatre arts?

I have a 3.57 GPA as of now.

I acted in a play in high school as a freshman and then got a supporting character role this year as a Junior in a stellar performance of Amadeus at my high school. I Assistant Produced the past musical and I will be doing so for the upcoming talent show. I am also casted as one of the leads in our One Acts Festival. In addition, I was on running crew for the musical last year (Sophomore).

Outside of high school, I have been casted as an Extra on a television show for FOX last year and appeared in a radio PSA Commercial 2 years ago.

The SAT score they have is a 2230 (730 CR, 710 M, 790 W) and a 201 PSAT score.

I also got a stellar recommendation from my drama director who is a professional director and actor.

The one thing I’m worried about is the paragraph responses. For the first question about the meaning of theatre in the world, I wrote about how it can enrich the public, brighten their days, and teach them lessons. For the question focused on the meaning of theatre to me, personally, I spoke of how much I truly value the friendships and bonds I have made through my involvement in theatre. I wrote these on a whim, but they were truly how I felt, with no editing from any outsiders.

What do you think my chances are at being accepted? By the way, I applied regular, not early (which was a mistake, but I just couldn’t find the time to finish my app)

Thank you so much! :)

letsgocaps,
My son was a Cherub in the summer of '09.
Your GPA and SAT scores put you well into the mix for acceptance as a Cherub. While you may not have the heaviest theatre resume among the applicants, I think you’ve shown enough interest in theatre to satisfy the admissions committee. It depends on how many spots they have left.

Thank you so much for your input, I definitely appreciate it.
We’ll just have to wait… :P

letsgocaps,
Good luck to you! Like many others, my son says that the Cherubs program was a life-changing experience. He was recently accepted into the Class of 2014 at Northwestern in the theatre program.

hi:

I’ve been getting a lot of PM’s asking for more information on the arts edge. the website is theartedege dot com. I think this website does not allow for posting webmail addresses. you can also call 617 823.6564 and speak to Halley.

sooo excited, cuz i was accepted today! I can’t wait for this summer!!! :D

I’m trying to decide between the Steinhardt summer program and the CMU program. Does anyone know how these two programs compare?

Brandnew to this site and needhelp from all of you. First off what is OCU?? Where? All these initial schools drive me nuts! Have a rising senior wanting to do musical theatre. Wants a liberal arts school with an awesome theatre program but also wants to whole fraternity/sorority football games mixers scene. Excellent student academically- pretty strong SAT’s and taking AP courses. Her real talent is in musical theatre however - strong voice - strong presence onstage. Weakness… dance can do combinations just lacking technique. Now after all that - please someone give me some guidance. Just starting this process and need your help.

Hi & Welcome! OCU = Oklahoma City University.

The first thing you should do is look at the home page for the Musical Theatre Forum, [Musical Theater Major - College Confidential](Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums) where there is a thread called “Suggestions for those new to the Musical Theatre Forum.” Then look above that thread for the one that says, approximately, “Class of 2009 - 2010, Preparing to Apply.” Then look at the Big List of MT Colleges which will tell you where to find the various types of degrees.
Finally, plan on pulling a few almost all-nighters as you read and read and read! :)

Welcome mountgrace!! Classicalbk gave you a great place to start your research. The other “advice” I have is to not be afraid to ask questions! There are so many great resources here. There is a LOT of information so dive right on in.

Hi! This is my first time posting a question although I have been following the comments for a while. My daughter who is a h.s. sophmore has been invited to Broadway Triple Threat in NYC at the MMAC this summer. Is anyone familiar with this summer intensive? How would you compare it to the Braodway Artist Alliance program? Thanks for your comments.

Hello all! I am super new here (first post!) but I have been lurking for a while. I will be attending the Arts Edge summer program in New York and I was wondering if anyone else on here is as well?

Good move. I’m sure you will get a lot out of it.
