If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about finding something selctive; I’d look for something unique and quirky in an area you’ve always wanted to explore but haven’t 'til now. Summer programs are a chance to take risks, build new skills and live in a different community than you are used to. When I was in high school, I did a summer homestay in Africa, and even though it wasn’t a selective program, it gave me stories and experiences and a perspective on the world that matters more to me now than Governor’s School did. I don’t know whether you’d be more interested in circus camp or immersing yourself in Swahili; if you’ve always wanted to learn to swim or even water ski, or if you would rather devote yourself to the culinary arts, but why not follow your own unique passion? Or why not try something completely out of character and see if you like it?

if you are looking for a way to impress Adcoms, remember that the best way to do that is to be fully and passionately yourself–follow your own interests, and dare to be you.

I’m a girl, interested in multiple subjects…writing, relphil…science…almost anything. :)

And your advice is right on the spot, this is about following my passions…and definitely not about impressing an adcom. It’s way too early for that and that’s not the point anyway. I was just curious about the more selective ones because those tend to have the most passionate students. That doesn’t mean the other programs don’t though ! I wouldn’t want to attend a summer program full of kids who aren’t engaged in the material of study.

I’m thinking of doing creative writing at Intercholen center for the arts as of now…that way, I will also get to learn more about the visual arts, which is somewhat new for me.

Ugh now i’m undecided. Perhaps I would like to do a volunteer trip somewhere…but I’m still a bit under the age group for those programs, I think.

By the way the wording on the first post was a bit weird. As in, the topic of summer camps and HADES was completely unrelated. The last sentence was just a btw, since this is the prep school forum and I thought people might want to know, haha.

As in the purpose of summer camps isn’t to impress hades…I read it again and that’s what it sounded like. It was just a side note.

CTD at Northwestern. It’s rigorous (coursework) but you get free time and weekend trips into Chicago and go to the beach often, and offers nearly every class you would have at school. Offers AP courses and HS credit for all classes, generous aid, and you can still register now. If you go 1st session you might see me there :)

i recommend davidson THINK . very in-depth, i attended courses in classics and math there

and its ok i know you didn’t mean you were trying to impress schools, meanings just get misconstrued on the internet … ive read your posts and it seems like you do things cause youre genuinely passionate aboutthem. by the way im also on the waiting list for 2 schools, i wish you luck and hope it plays out well

I will also be doing a photojournalism project while in China…

…so hard to decide. Seems like I’ll be having a busy summer vacation, between camp and traveling. I also secured an internship at a publishing company.

Hi, sorry I forget to reply to that post. It looks great, but I think it’s probably a bit too pricey. They charge it by course instead of total tuition, right?

Do many boarding school students take summer camps/programs/classes? I’ve never been to one before, and I don’t plan to, and im wondering if that would affect my grade at school? (since I know a lot of students at my current school go to summer programs to learn stuff in advance so that they know everything once school starts…)

Usually I go on vacation, watch movies, read books, draw, etc during the summer… So maybe I should do something different this year?

Yeah, well I don’t know if alot of them do but I met 8 at CTD last year in one session (probably more I didn’t really talk to) and I was also accepted into 5 prestigious BS.

The application deadline for quite a few programs, including THINK, has already passed. I mentioned Brown because I know they are still accepting. Another program that you might want to look at is Great Books at Amherst and Stanford.

@Rellielou; No, THINK’s application deadline has not passed yet. In its frequently asked questions it says:

Q. When are the application deadlines?
Applications are currently being accepted and reviewed on a space-available basis. We only have a handful of spots available, so hurry and apply today!

But then again, maybe all the spots are already filled. xD

THINK, btw, is a very intense experience. Two complete college courses in 3 weeks, for credit! Students must be very well prepared to succeed there.

Oh, maybe that’s right. I’m not sure, I only checked the website. This thread has reminded me to start planning my summer out! Anyone else have suggestions? :)
