SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR MUSIC

I know for a fact that Interlochen and NHSMI (Northwestern) offer scholarships and need-based aid. I'm fairly certain that most of the other big summer programs do also.

Check with a local school of music or conservatory and they should be able to give recommendations. At my school, we have flyers all over the place advertising summer programs (both to attend and for undergrad and grad music students to teach/coach/assist with).

hexagonsun,

Indiana University's Summer Piano Academy is very generous with scholarships money. You can apply for both financial aid and merit scholarship. Wonderful faculty and facilities. Also, summer music festival takes place at the same time with many concerts. D had a wonderful time both times. Apply early. D got 35 % (of totoal cost) merit scholarship the first year. She applied just before the deadline the second year. Most of the scholarship money was awarded. But since she was a returning student, Dr. Taylor managed to get her some money, not as much as the first year, but still very good.

Well, we have sent in applications and am now in the waiting process. Just wondering how everyone else is doing?!! Also, any info on Carnigie Mello Summer Pre-College Program? I know they have a top college program, since older d applied there for musical theater!! Has anyone attended the program for music (flute) ?
Thanks!

Does anyone know how hard Tanglewood is to get into for people who don't study at a conservatory? My teacher told me that I'm good enough to study at Julliard Prep (she's close with several of the teachers) but I am not willing to dedicate my weekend to going to NYC and back, and she told me that Tanglewood accepts mainly Julliard Prep and Manhattan Prep people, and that it's very political and based on connections, does anyone have any information?

Tanglewood is not easy to get into for anyone. Having a teacher who is at the conservatory and/or major professional orchestra level is a big advantage though. The reason for that is usually not politics or nepotism; it is because students of the very best teachers play better than most of the competition.

The year my daughter went, there was not a single member of the double bass section that went to either Juilliard Prep or Manhattan Prep. Seven of the ten members of that year's bass section are now in top conservatories or music schools (including Curtis, Juilliard, Rice, NEC, BU and Oberlin). I can't quote numbers for other sections, but I do remember from the program book that, while the NYC area was reasonably well represented, the vast majority of BUTI kids were nowhere close enough to commute to the city on the weekend.

I suppose it is possible that there is some politics involved and that a few people get in based on connections and school affiliations. If that is happening, it would make a lot more sense if they came from the Boston area since that is where most of the Tanglewood staff comes from.

The summer I was at Tanglewood (assuming you're talking about BUTI), one bassoonist, one oboist, and one clarinetist went to Juilliard Pre-College; another clarinetist went to MSM Pre-College. None of the brass or percussion went to either, as far as I can recall, and only a few strings did. I can't quote numbers for any of the other disciplines (piano, composition, voice), though I don't think it was at all an overwhelming presence.

:) thank you

Tanglewood looks like it's free for everyone who gets in -- but they state on their site that they expect these participants to be between 18 and 30!! Hardly a great environment for a high school musician. They do incredible work there, but it doesn't seem to be especially designed for developing excellent young performers ... you have to already be in the top 0.001%.

If you're looking for a program that will challenge your abilities, both in the ensembles and in private instruction, I can recommend NYSMF (New York Summer Music Festival) without any prejudice. Never mind that I'm the place's Director of Communications, I'm an actor, not a musician, and I am continually astonished at the levels our students achieve during camp.

NYSMF has a ton of students from advanced pre-college music programs like Juilliard, MSM, and LaGuardia. Many of the faculty also have roots in those programs, and also teach during the year at places like Curtis and perform in groups like the NY Phil, the Philly Orch, and the NY Pops.

A few of NYSMF Visiting Artists also spend time at Tanglewood, like violinist Pamela Frank, but take the time to run over because they like the program and the people so much. Our lineup of Visiting Artists easily represents the finest collection of professional musicians ever seen in the area. You'd have to travel all the way to NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, or Boston to match the lineup at NYSMF during the summer.

Most importantly, NYSMF doesn't forget that summer is also a time to have fun. So while everyone takes their music very, very seriously (they have to in order to put on 30 concerts a summer!), we all want this to be a place where you can explore new aspects of music and creativity. Like violists who have never played jazz; or trumpeters who are interested in composition; or singers who are curious about filmmaking and writing original songs. Plus hanging out with new friends, meeting people from different states and countries, and having pizza-eating contests.

Check the program out at http://www.nysmf.org. There's a lot for the strictest band geek or orch dork, as well as for the beginning saxophonist. Hope to hear from you!

NYSMF--welcome to CC. I think you've got your Tanglewood programs mixed up (there are two). Tanglewood Institute, the program folks have been talking about here, is indeed for high school students and is certainly not free! (although scholarships are available).

http://www.bu.edu/cfa/music/tanglewood/index.htm

Absolutely right, orchestramom. NYSMF is apparently referring to the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) program which is intended for college students and fairly recent graduates. TMC Fellows receive full tuition, lodging and two meals per day. It is also possible to audit that program for a fee of $350 per week and you pay for all of your own meals and lodging. More information can be found at http://www.tanglewood.org/itemB/detail2columnTMC.jhtml?id=22800002&area=tgl

The program most often mentioned here on CC is the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), which is the one for high school students. Orchestramom has already provided a link to that one.

DISCLAIMER: I have no affiliation with either TMC or BUTI, except as the parent of a student who attended BUTI a couple of years back.

I have heard great things about BUTI, as i was just about to send in my deposit to study there last year, but last minute, i switched and decided to go to EMF. Hard to describe how amazing an experience it was, but here's the website

http://www.easternmusicfestival.org/

I'm here if anyone has any questions (particularly questions about the piano program) :-)

How is the NYSMF summer program for voice? I am looking for a summer program in PA, NJ or NY state for my daughter. I am also looking for an affordable program or one that offers financial aid.

Our D went to NYSMF last year; she is currently a HS sophomore, interested in voice. She was very happy with the voice offerings at NYSMF, and will be returning this summer.

It's strongly geared toward classical, but the woman in charge of jazz vocals was terrific, too. Most of the faculty comes from NYC-Philly. I think the two main vocal teachers are from Manhattan School of Music. Most of the vocal work seemed to be geared toward choral, and they got terrific conductors -- the one my D worked with was from Curtis and Westminster Choir.

If your D is an accomplished singer who wants to burnish her solo work, it might not be the best choice. But if she is working toward college admission -- building repertoire list, technique, etc. NYSMF would be a fine choice.

I researched a lot, and it is hard to do better on price.
