Just a note...(sorry about the pun), New England Music Camp is for students age 11-18. Actually most of the students there are entering 11th grade or younger. When my kids were there, there were not too many kiddos who were going into their senior years. BUT that does not diminish the quality of their program. It is terrific...very talented and devoted kids and staff, from all over the place.

Some possibilities: Hartwick Music Festival in Oneonta NY, Northwestern Univ in Evanston Il (but fairly high test scores and grades seem to be preferred there), I also think there is an orchestra program at Sewanee in Tenn. There is also Blue Lake in Michigan.

Our son just auditioned this past sunday for Eastern Music Festival for this summer. He thought it went well and has his fingers crossed for acceptance.

How rigorous is the Northwestern summer institute (for strings)?

Like with Music schools, camps are very dependent on your instrument, the teacher and your needs.

A student who is looking to have fun and play some music has a different fit than one hoping to get that edge to pass audition into one of the Conservatories.

Interlochen is living on reputation and price is way too high. Also not really a representative college type experience in my opinion as one person mentioned.

It still is good for most string players who want a competitive but rustic environment. Not really recommended for most wind players.

Also look at how big the camps are and what age range they accept. Gives a clue how good the player next to you or you child will be.

Examine the faculty. Find out about the teacher for your instrument like you would if you were looking at Music School.

One size does not fit all.

Has anyone gone to or sent their child to the Vocal Choral Institute Summer program through the Boston Conservatory? My son has been accepted and we'd love to know about others' experiences.

How are the piano programs at Aspen and Bowdoin for high school students? Are the programs "fun"?

Anyone gone to the masterclasses at Tanglewood? I think it's the two week program. Particularly interested in trumpet players who have gone.

Are you talking about the two week trumpet workshop? My son went the first year he went to Tanglewood. He loved it...yes, on trumpet.

I'd like some info as well. Mine has an application pending.

Mominva...they are sending out the acceptances this week..you can call...they are very nice and they'll tell you right away.

Daughter went for both the workshop and BUTI orchestra as a rising senior. She loved them both.

symphonymom: My son attended the 2 week trumpet workshop prior to to the BUTI orchestra program last summer. He enjoyed the workshop, however, the BSO was not in residence at Tanglewood during the time of the workshop. Just thought you might want to know this, since free BSO concerts are a big deal for the kids at BUTI. Have you considered any of the 1 or 2 week college audition prep programs? We have received brochures from Indiana U. and Northwestern in the past. Not sure what's available this summer. My son will be spending the summer at home this year, for the first time in 5 years!

I am so happy for you that you will have your son home with you! Thanks so much for the college audition prep info! I think he'll definitely do that next summer! It's a great way for him to see whether he likes those colleges, as well. We can't do the longer program this summer...he has a tour to Italy (he's soloing...so he thought it would be good experience...and then there's the pasta) and a masterclass in mid-July that he was invited to play (very tough life). Thanks so much for the info!

Anybody know anything about the Northwestern summer program?

Mommab, my son will be at home this year for the first time in 8 years...waitlisted at Aspen and Brevard. He plans to teach private lessons, wait tables, TAKE private lesson, practice a LOT, and hopefully relax.

OK, that's funny, Thumper1...see my message to you. That's EXACTLY what I did the summer before I graduated. I got great contacts that ended up getting me my first job. Sometimes fate takes a hand in all of his. The relaxing part is key...:)

zoidberg - D attended NHSMI (at Northwestern) last summer and enjoyed it immensely. Master classes and lessons were good, performing opportunities were excellent, seminars and theory classes were very good, as well. The atmosphere there was less "competitive" than some places she has been, and she really enjoyed the experience.

thanks for responding, rainmom. How are the quality of the strings? I know that NU is definitely more known for its wind/brass than its strings, so I was wondering if it was less competitve (to get in), or something.

Sorry, Zoidberg - I don't know much about the string program there at all. (I am a bit brass-centric!) There did seem to be strings of a range of levels there.
