Hi CCers, (semi) quick question...

I applied to five summer programs this year. My 'safety' was Eastman Music Horizons, which I've done once already. I was accepted there (no surprise) but I have no real desire to go back unless I can't go elsewhere. Up until today, I thought I had a good shot at going elsewhere, but now I don't think that's the case.

I had an amazing audition at Tanglewood for BUTI, better than most of my college auditions, and I was really hoping for an acceptance at least to their clarinet workshop... but I just got a rejection by way of email today.

I realize I've only mentioned two out of the five I applied to - but the others I applied to by CD and my CDs are far from what I feel is my best quality of playing. It was a hugely stressful time when I recorded them and they didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped (and with six live college auditions to coordinate, I had no chance to try again). Therefore, I'm assuming I'll get denied from the other programs as well, since they're all equally competitive as Tanglewood.

Obviously I should have been smarter and applied to a better safety program. I shouldn't have been betting on a BUTI acceptance either - that was naive. But it's too late now, most deadlines have passed.

So here's my question: What programs are left that I could apply to (that are worth applying to!)?
I am a clarinetist, and a rising college freshman heading either to Indiana or CCM (haven't decided yet.)
I would really like to go somewhere where I'm not the only 18-year-old among a sea of younger students, but if the program is awesome, I can get over that. I know a lot of the selective programs are closed, but I'd really like a good clarinet professor above all... someone that will help me get in gear for next fall so I'm not on the bottom of the heap.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions - this board has helped me so much over the last few years.

Aria has clarinets, and while the official deadline has passed, I called the guy in charge (Mihai Tetel) the other day and , for strings at least, they still had openings. You might give him a call and ask if they have room for another clarinet!

I'm not a clarinet expert...but when my son didn't get accepted at a summer fest a couple of years ago, one of his teachers recommended a trumpet masterclass that was a week long. The deadline had passed, but they hadn't filled it and he was accepted via email. You might want to research clarinet workshops...there must be something during the summer. I know there is an oboe one too.

You could take a look at NYSMF, the New York Summer Music Festival. Its faculty comes mostly from Curtis, and other schools in the DC-NYC-BOS corridor. While ages do go down as low as 10, the very young are scarce. You'll find a pretty good mix of HS and college ages. I think their deadline is May 15. Check out their website: Summer Music Camp - NYSMF - New York Summer Music Festival - for Outstanding Young Musicians.

My son plays Viola and is going to AMEROPA in Prague, Czech Republic He has a friend who went there last few years for Clarinet and says it was great. I believe application deadline is April 15. Google AMEROPA for the website

Another late date..CD applications due April 6th.. One of S2's cello friends has applied and wanted to find out if anyone knows anything about it. All they know so far is what is on the website-which says

Sphinx Performance Academy, SPA, is a full-scholarship music camp
intensive 2-week chamber music/solo performance program
for young Black and Latino string players, ages 12-17
Harlem Quartet is the faculty-in-residence

It is on the campus of Walnut Hill School, an arts boarding school in the suburbs of Boston. D's roommate from BUTI, many years ago, was a student here and students of Walnut Hill School are taught at NEC prep. I don't know if there is any summer, NEC/SPA relationship.

Does anyone know anything about this program? S2's friend's mom would like to know the real scoop on the program. Friend is a very smart, hard-working 12 year-old cellist. This is their first foray into the music world outside his local orchestra.

lostinthemusic, you can give this one a shot. http://www1.unl.edu/music/CMI/

It's a one week chamber intensive program if that is your interest. The Chiara Quartet (UNebraka Quartet in residence, 08-09 Blodgett Artists in Residence at Harvard) and other UNeb instructors comprise the faculty.

While focus is on preformed ensembles, there is need for individual instrumentalists.

Application date is open until all position are filled.

Competitive admission. Program is full scholarship (tuition, room & board).

The year my son attended, attendees included ensembles from Juilliard, Yale, Indiana, a mix of undergrad and grad students.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! :D
