Hi. I’ve recently been admitted to Bard and plan on attending. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a summer reading list and if so what it entails. I find summer reading lists to be somewhat “high school-ish” but none the less its probably worth knowing. Thanks.

There will be and arrival at college is August 2nd. Are you aware of the new students writing and discussion classes?

This is incorrect. Arrival at college is Saturday, August 8th. L & T (Language & Thinking) begins on Monday August 10th, but the weekend prior is “orientation”. And if you think it’s “high school-ish”, you’ll be in for a big surprise!!

From the Bard website:

“As you know, new Bard students arrive on campus on Saturday, August 8, in preparation for a three-week program beginning on August 10 called the Workshop in Language and Thinking (L&T), which consists essentially of two components: the academic workshops and the nonacademic opening weekend activities. L&T is an intensive, three-week writing program exclusively for first-year students. You will read extensively in several genres, work on many different kinds of writing projects, and meet in small groups to discuss the texts you have read and your own writing. Through these activities, you will learn to read and listen more thoughtfully, to articulate ideas, to review your own work critically, and, most basically, to recognize the link between thought and expression.”

And here’s last year’s reading list. This year’s has not yet been posted:

It’s the only program of its kind in the country. Yet another thing that makes Bard…Bard.

Okay, Thanks?

From what I’ve read on the Bard website the Workshop in Language and Thinking is completely different from any kind of High school reading list. So I’m not sure why you’re comparing the two. But thanks.

I’m comparing the two, because in your original post you said:

Ah, okay, well thank you. Yeah, when I said that I was mostly referring to the cliche teacher demand of “Read this, this and this, etc… and we may or may not discuss the test in depth.” but I have no doubt the Workshop in L&T will be intense and original. Thanks again.

^^ Ah, so. I didn’t catch that drift, but now I do. :)

Me neither. It should be an incredible experience.
