Alright, so! I have written a pretty nice personal statement with a nice little story explaining what sparked my interest in medicine. My personal statement's story is of my grandmother, who has Alzheimer's disease...which really affected me. I have already sent my personal statement to several summer research programs, HOWEVER. There is a research program that I would LOVE to do. Only problem is....that it's a cancer research program. I don't know what I should do. My PS is pretty good, but won't they be wondering why I'm trying to get into cancer research when my PS clearly states that I have more of an interest in alzheimer's research......
My mother has had cancer for years now, and I would be able to write a decent personal statement about my experience. Both experiences have impacted my life in so many ways, so I would really enjoy both.
I also want to kind of stand out from the pool of applicant which I am assuming are also going to write about cancer in their family members' lives. So I don't know what to do! Please I need some advice.

It’s really not about your exact experience per se, but rather, how you write it. The folks making those decisions like to know how you got from point A to where you are now, but they’re not expecting to only hire researchers because they have a personal connection to a particular disease.
