Summer school at USC vs. community college

According to the Summer Housing Brochure from last year, only off-campus USC owned building are available to summer students.

<a href="http://housing.usc.edu/forms/Summer_Housing_Bro_FINAL_08_lo.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://housing.usc.edu/forms/Summer_Housing_Bro_FINAL_08_lo.pdf</a></p>

Thank you so much for the on-line housing brochure. My concern now, is living off campus in the summer and the ability to go off campus without a car. Plus, what the surrounding off campus area is like in the summer. I live in a very nice suburb near an East coast city where professionals and students ride public transportation (train, buses). However, the summer is another story for public transportation which services poor people. The problem is not the poor people. The difficulty is with out of work youth and potential safety concerns. Are there safety concerns off campus in the summer at USC?
Also, what is there really to do for students on campus in addition to summer classes?
I think my son should either come home for the summer or go to UCLA summer school.
I lived in Westwood many years ago as a student and the summers are very nice there.
Any thoughts?
