I know about the summer seminar but I was wondering about how many people apply to the seminar and about how many get in.

Here are some stats from last year:

Applications this year: ~12,000
Applications on first day: ~1,000
Attendees: ~1,800

Maryland: 763 applicants, 84 admitted
Virginia: 743 applicants, 79 admitted
Texas: 963 applicants, 89 admitted
California: 1,146 applicants, 120 admitted
New York: 557 applicants, 65 admitted (11 from NYC)

Approximately 50% of those who attend NASS do NOT pursue appointments to USNA. 45% of those accepted to NASS are accepted to USNA.

Just to let everyone who's applying to the SS, don't feel discouraged if you don't get it.

I didn't get it and was crushed by it, I thought I would never get in USNA. But I worked my butt off my senior year to bring up my ACT's and get into leadership roles(Real big deal for admissions) and advanced classes and I got an LOA for USNA.

So to all of you applying, good luck! I hope you get in, but don't feel bad if you don't, just give up!

wow it seems very difficult and competitive to get in. Do you know any of the numbers for the other academies?

mitch - keep in mind those stats are from very competitive states. at NASS they're trying to get a good geographical representation and they want to give opportunities to people who might not otherwise have a chance to visit the academy. states that aren't represented as mush as the ones JB listed will have much different statistics.

I'm from NJ though so I realize it will be a little easier for me, but I can't really imagine to much easier for a northeastern state.

yeah, NJ's a pretty competitive state, too.

Sorry!

Edit on my last post.

Don't* give up!

LOL!

didn't even notice it until you mentioned that you forgot the "don't"

For West Point SLS they told us there were around 3,600 applicants, 800 were admitted. At USAFASS there were roughly 1200 applicants, 750 were admitted. Just what I remember from last year. I think its odd that USNA has so many more applicants to their summer seminar than the other academies...

Navy.mil has an old article stating that in 2006 there were 5,500 applications for NASS. That is some jump to 12,000.

Hmmm I got this info from this very forum about 9 months ago.

So I'm sure it could be wrong.

I am not questioning the numbers, I just think the increase in applications is astounding. What was the previous thread?

"Approximately 50% of those who attend NASS do NOT pursue appointments to USNA."

this is an interesting stat, i wonder why? i guess some people just didn't like the SS

^^^^
it might be that. or they had interests in other academies. i encountered a lot of that at the summer seminars. several of my platoon mates from SLS were in my company and even squad at NASS. and some of my friends at NASS had been to or were headed to USAFASS and the CGA summer seminar.
on top of that, i met some kids at SLS that only went because it was the summer LEADERS seminar... they were only there for the leadership experience and not the academy.
i think about half of the people you meet at the summer seminars (at least in my experience) have another first choice academy/school. i went to SLS even though WP was barely my second choice. my room mate from SLS decided later in the summer that she didn't want to go to WP so she didn't pursue an appt.

^^
I had similar encounters. I know a couple people from my squad that applied NROTC but not the Academy. Same story for our neighboring squad.

Also, the majority of the people I met at NASS said they wanted to be a pilot. I assume one of the reasons they were there was to decide between USNA, USAFA, or a ROTC program (or possibly even USMA for helo's). If they didn't like the experience, they didn't apply. There were not too many people I met that were there because they loved the Navy or the Naval Academy.

AF6872: I cannot seem to find the thread. Try doing a search.
