I'm currently a high school student, but I was wondering whether it's highly recommended that undergrads who later want to pursue an MD/PhD program do summer research. If so, should it be all the summers, or just the last one or two? How many research programs/internships should a person apply to? Are some programs more prestigious than others? Thanks for the info.

Yeah you should apply for internships at a Medical schools.. there you will shadow med students and physcians.

I don't think shadowing is what this poster is looking for, and rightly so. If you are planning on an MD/PhD, you do need SIGNIFICANT biological/biomedical research experience. While shadowing and demonstrating that you want to be a doctor is important, MD/PhD programs are looking for future academic physicians that will work in the research field. Do as much as you can, start as early as possible.

You should apply to a substantial number. The most "prestigious" are very competitive. But anything where you are exposed to research and ideally are involved in publishing some sort of paper is good.

is there a page with a list of all summer research opp available?
