NEW PALTZ — Donald P. Christian, who has been interim president of SUNY New Paltz since July 2010, was appointed to the job on a permanent basis Wednesday by the SUNY Board of Trustees, according to the college.

The vote to appoint Christian was unanimous, the college said in a press release emailed to the media.

Christian, who was the provost and vice president for academic affairs at SUNY New Paltz when he became interim president, was the lone remaining candidate for the job after several other finalists withdrew during the search and interview process.

Christian’s appointment by the State University of New York Board of Trustees followed recommendations by the SUNY New Paltz Presidential Search Committee and the College Council and a formal nomination by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher.

Christian, who became interim president when Steven Poskanser stepped down a year ago, will be paid $225,000 a year as president, the college said.

“When the board first met Dr. Christian a year ago, we knew right away he would bring a passion for education to one of SUNY’s most treasured campuses,” Carl T. Hayden, chairman of the SUNY Board of Trustees, said in a prepared statement. “We are so pleased to provide the opportunity for him to continue sharing that passion with the New Paltz community.”

Zimpher, also in a prepared statement, said Christian “has maintained and exceeded the level of excellence we have come to expect from SUNY New Paltz.”

“I am truly thrilled to continue working and partnering with Dr. Christian, and I thank the board for confirming his nomination as president,” the chancellor said.

“I am very pleased with the appointment of Donald Christian as the next president of SUNY New Paltz,” said Kenneth J. Abt, chairman of the Presidential Search Committee and the College Council. “This is a great outcome for the college.”

Christian said in a prepared statement that he is “excited about what we have achieved and what we will continue to build in the future.”

“I am honored by the opportunity to lead such a special college and to be part of SUNY’s many contributions to public higher education and the quality of life in New York,” he said.

Christian and his wife, Sandy, a psychotherapist, live in New Paltz and have two children.

Good for him. Wish they would let Bing pick a new president already.
