Suny New Paltz -SUNY NEW PALTZ - College of Science and Engineering

Hey guys, I am considering Suny New Paltz as a university to attend to for a major somewhere in the tech and science fields. My main choice would follow through tech (Computer engineering), since science is always generally a bit harder in my opinion at least. I would also like to major in computer science if the computer engineering program is not applicable or is not good to take at New Paltz. However, I am more of a hardware guru when it comes to computers rather than a software guru. I am still eager to learn however, despite not taking an introductory class in high school due to personal reasons. How are the tech programs for majors such as Computer Engineering and Computer Science?

If the tech programs are not worthy at New Paltz, how are the science programs? I am mainly interested in the fields of chemistry and biology, not social or political sciences.

SUNY New Paltz: Our Computer Engineering program is fantastic. It has some really brilliant faculty members, very small class sizes and access to state of the art facilities. All students also get to participate in senior design projects that take the curriculum to the next level. Learn more about it on the Science and Engineering web site.

Also, feel free to contact the department and hear it first hand from faculty and department staff members (845)257-3720.

This was from the SUNY New Paltz facebook page in response ot someone asking about their Computer Engineering dept. Thought I’d pass it on to you. If you have any other questions about the school, my son is a student there.

Wow that sounds great! I do like a smaller community as it tends to make you feel much less of a number and more of someone who counts. However, I am curious as to how likely I am getting into this school…

To give a basic overview, I am a tech geek and I do like math and science as well. I generally like to always work hard even if I do not excel in that area. My current high school GPA is a 3.5. I don’t take any Advanced placement classes. My SAT Score is a 1630/2400 with a 580 in math, 490 in reading, and 560 in writing. My extra curricular activities are being on the debate team and the school newspaper organization for my junior year, continuing onto my senior year (my school is small and didn’t contain more clubs pertaining to computers that I was interested in). I have tutored my peers for free for Biology in my sophomore and junior years, as well as Math B during my junior year. I have recruited people of all ages during my freshman year to help spread the “30 Hour Famine” event which spreads the cause to fight world hunger. Sadly, much of my volunteer work was done in grades 7 and 8 but I still want to show that I am willing to help others.

During my free time (if this matters), I build, mod, and fix computers which gives me a lot of background when it comes to computer hardware. I have also been a co founder for a few game servers that were successful and recruited administrators to help out for the community that played on those servers.

With a strong base in computer hardware, 3.5 GPA, and a 1070 for math and critical reading combined, how likely do you think I am of getting accepted for choosing Computer Engineering as my entry major? (I have not visited the school yet but I know that also slightly increases my chances of going, my sibling does not attend New Paltz if you are wondering).

These are the stats for getting into SUNY New Paltz:

“For the fall 2009 entering class the mean SAT was 1170 (CR & M) and the mean ACT score was 26.” “We look for a range of an 87-93 high school average.”

Do you know about the other programs at New Paltz?

In particular about their science programs in regards to health. I want to pursue becoming a doctor and was wondering if i attend New Paltz, will i have the best opportunities in regards to medical school? Are their science programs in regards to health any good?
