My son just got accepted early action and is very excited. Wondering if anyone had insight about dorms, gyms, etc? Thanks
Still waiting… and waiting… and waiting.
She so desperately wants to go there!! We visited last week, and she’s absolutely in love with the school.
It’s so weird the way that they respond. We know people that have heard for 2 weeks now about SUNY Cortland but we still have not heard anything either hopefully by next week we will all be done with this waiting game .
The one thing that has me really calming her down is that a number of my own students are waiting to hear as well.
Enough is enough. I would love to know, for better or worse, by Christmas. I need to have my happy, unstressed daughter back!
But, as far as your son goes, absolutely go and take a tour at some point. All of the following is from memory a week later. I would have taken notes, but I mortified my daughter at the previous school by being the only one doing so.
If I recall correctly, there are 3 frosh dorms, and additional frosh rooms in a 4th dorm. One of the dorms-- of course I forget which one-- has a cafeteria in it, so that would mean the ability to stay inside on a cold snowy morning.
The campus is on a hill. Buildings pretty much line the perimeter with lots of grassy space in the middle. Standing on the bottom and looking up, the dorms are all in the lower right hand corner, the science buildings mostly bottom left, as is the building for hospitality classes. The classrooms and library go up hill. Towards the top is the student center, and I think the gym. The one cafeteria we really saw had a number of different stations-- Asian, pasta, and so on.
What impressed me the most was how nice the kids were. We asked one girl for directions to the start of the tour, and she stopped (On a COLD December day) to point it out to us, and to suggest we move our car. She really loved her school and was happy to help. Other kids were happy to hold doors-- one group of guys yelled “Come to Oneonta, you’ll love it!” as we passed by. (And of course, every kid was “cute.” which made my daughter very happy.)
Oh, and the buildings were comfortably heated in the cold weather. That mattered to me.
There are plenty of dorms if you choose to stay on campus for all 4 years; frosh and soph years are mandatory if you’re not commuting. No cars for frosh or sophs-- there simply isn’t enough parking.
I would be very comfortable with my daughter attending Oneonta!
Fingers, toes, eyes and kidneys crossed that we all get the news we’re hoping for soon.
My friend’s D is there. My friend says it is very hilly. Her D likes it. My D was accepted there but opted for a different SUNY so I have never been to the campus.
