We are most of the students from that attend SUNY Plattsburgh? Is it a "regional" school with most students coming from near by high schools - and making it a school where students already know each other and go home on weekends?

Not at all. There are a mix of kids from the entire state as well as a good amount of Vermonters and Foreign Students. It's a very good balance. We love the school. The students are friendly, the professors are very accessible, classes are small, and plenty of kids choose to do a semester abroad. The nice thing is that the school is centrally located within the town/small city. A five minute cab ride or shuttle ride will take you uptown where there is a nice big mall (American Eagle, Old Navy, Best Buy, Movie Theater, and all of the other stores usually found in a big mall), a Staples, Super Wallmart, Target, and restaurants. You can walk downtown from the school and enjoy a few hours in the older part of town. Downtown has the bars, some restaurants, pizza, and the lake.

It is definitely not a commuter school. The campus is alive and busy during the weekends. There are plenty of New York kids at the school but NY is a big state. Many are from L.I. and they are not about to make a 7 hour driving trip to go home on the weekends. I recommend that you go for a visit and see it for yourself. It's a very friendly campus and community.

Cut and pasted from their website: "About 90 percent of our students are New York State residents. More than 400 students come from 49 different countries and 24 states. Approximately 1000 new freshmen enroll each fall semester who study a variety of academic programs."

There are quite a few kids attending from Long Island.

Here is the breakdown as posted on the SUNY Plattsburgh website:

86.4% of our freshman students are New York State Residents. Top 5 New York State counties include:
1. Clinton
2. Suffolk
3. St. Lawrence
4. Albany
5. Franklin

As you can see, #2 on the list is Suffolk Country which is part of Long Island.

It’s worth noting that from Plattsburgh, it’s very easy to visit Montr
