SUNYs I'm interested in

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum. I just visited my first school and thought it would be a good idea to hop on the internet to find some quality info and discovered this forum. So im not strictly looking at only SUNY schools but i am interested in learning more about them. I visited SUNY New Paltz today and liked the campus very much and I would definitley consider going there. Then again it is the first school I've visited so I don't have much to compare it to. I'm also planning on checking out Cortland and although they may be reaches, Binghamton and/or Geneseo. Some first hand info/reviews/thoughts from some students/alumni/parents of these schools wud be great. I am a swimmer and am looking to swim in college. I actually got the tour at New Paltz today from the swim coach, who seems like a great coach and seems to want me for the team. So again, some stuff about these couple schools would be great. And even some other SUNY schools would be cool too. I'm not too informed so I don't necessarily know which ones I'm interested in yet. The ones mentioned just pop out to me.

I am a student at SUNY New Paltz. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

You may want to PM the user LilyMoon. Her S graduated from New Paltz recently.

Well just like how is the school? Like obviously your going to probably say its great considering you go there. But like how are like the classes, the social life, the town, the stuff to do, etc?

After my freshman year at New Paltz, I was on a leave of absence. While on my leave of absence, I studied at two different universities. I chose to go back to New Paltz because I was happiest there.

I’d consider New Paltz fairly relaxed. People are generally friendly here. The school has an artsy sort of feel at times. I’ve still been able to make a challenging academic experience here. Professors are approachable and engaging from my experience. It’s also fairly easy to find a job on campus (this was another issue I had at the other universities).

I’m very happy with the classes here. I’m a history major and I’ve found my classes to be interesting and stimulating. There are a few professors I avoid taking for various reasons but overall I am very satisfied with academics here. New Paltz has a decent selection for classes. I’ve never had an issue making a schedule that I like (I have had that issue at another university).

If you’re interested in parties, you’ll find them. There are certain areas/houses that host events weekly. I think most kids are happy with it if they’re interesting in going out. Some kids party more than others. You will also find smaller events on campus depending on your preferences and acquaintances. If you’re not interested in drinking, the campus hosts a ton of events. There are events specifically designed for freshmen. You will also find events in the residence halls and through clubs.

I really like the town. It’s been that some of the other SUNY towns. New Paltz is a decent size. There is a student run bus service that will bring you to the village or town, but most things aren’t too far to walk to. There are plenty of places to eat, nice ethnic restaurants, a few shops. I love the Bistro! In town you will find most of what you need - groceries, pharmacies, a cinema, shops, etc. If you like doing outdoorsy things, there’s a mountain range within reasonable distance of the campus. Also, if you like open mic type events or anything involving music, you’ll be sure to find those types of things around!

There is also a bus that goes into Poughkeepsie or you can always go into the city on Trailways. I think there’s plenty to do!

If you have any other questions please let me know. I can also expand on anything I wrote above.

I’m also sorta in bfinn7994. I’m transferring from a CC and I looked at SUNY New Paltz in June, it did seem to have a relaxed and somewhat artsy and outdoorsy vibe, which I did like. I also visited Marist, which sorta had a kind of uptight feel compared to NP. What kinds of jobs can you find on campus?

2 of my friends are starting their freshmen year at new paltz… They are being tripled and apparently it’s happening a lot to freshmens.

This was a real turn off to me.

What things would you say NP could improve on?

Geneseo…well regarded for excellent academics, grad school placement, nationally recognized residence life program, growing alumni engagement initiatiives, beautiful campus, bright and well rounded students, competitive athletics program, …I would put this school on your radar.

Binghamton student here: DI Athletics, brand new dorms (0 - 3 years old, mostly), highest rank of SUNYs, large university -> more opportunities in research, social, clubs ect. Any specific q’s?

I’m not sure where Gen or Binghamton are, but I’m a huge concert person. Do concerts tours generally stop in a reasonable vicinity? I suppose that question goes for all the SUNYs. Is going into NYC a practical trip?

Going in to NYC - it depends. Albany is a 2 hour or so Amtrak ride away, Purchase is close, New Paltz is not far and Stony Brook is doable. Most of the rest are pretty far.

Check out the tour lists for your favorite bands over the years and see where they have gone before.

Geneseo is about 40 minutes South of Rochester…you would need to head to Rochester for major concerts.

Yes. During spring fling, and homecoming, big name bands come. This is true with every school, I think. For example, Binghamton had Far East Movement and Third Eye Blind. Last year we had Three Doors Down. Stuff like that.
