Supplement about woman in history or fiction

Would it be okay to write about the Virgin Mary?

I just don’t want to sound like a Bible thumper (I live in Florida’s Bible Belt) because I am definitely not.
I know that Barnard is completely liberal-minded, and I don’t want to come off as religiously conservative (again I’m not).

Should I choose another woman?
Pocahontas maybe?

I would say “go for it.” I doubt if they would make any negative judgements toward you for writing about the BVM.

i think you should write about anyone you feel passionate about!! i think it would be great to write about virgin mary!! i would love to meet with her and im not even christian or even that religious…so you wont necessarly come of as religiously conservative.

I agree! I wrote about benazir bhutto!

I think you should write about whomever you’d feel most passionate about! If it’s Mary, then write about Mary! I wrote about Mimi from Rent when I applied a few years ago.

Go for it! You clearly have your own reasons for wanting to write about the Virgin Mary, so there’s no reason to worry about misinterpretations of that. Besides the fact that, although Barnard tends to be more liberal, the admissions committee wouldn’t judge a socially conservative, fundamentalist Christian applicant any differently than someone who didn’t express any distinct religious tendencies. But, truly, no one is going to try to extrapolate complex and personal ideologies from that question, aside from what you put in your answer.
