Supplement Questions for transfers. What do they mean by "social fabric"?

Hello,

I am currently facing problem writing the Supplemental essays for transfer students at Barnard College. There are 2 short questions that are confusing me.

How did you first learn about Barnard College and what factors have influenced your decision to apply? Why do you think the College would be a good match for you?

Transfer student and alumna Margaret Mead ’23 said, “If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place.” How would you add to the fabric of Barnard’s community?

So far, I think I got the first question right. I covered topics like Midnight Breakfast, Columbia University, New York and women empowerment.

However, in the 2nd question I am completely lost. I wrote about the rigorous workload, helpful teachers. I wrote about the countless hours I am ready to spend in the library, how I want to capture every moment behind my camera lens, etc. My friend says I got the 2nd essay completely wrong. She says I am supposed to write why Barnard should want me here. I am no clue how to do that. I understand why my 2nd question is wrong. But I can’t fix it here. Can anyone help me out figure out where I went wrong with this essay. Right now, I don’t feel like applying to Barnard at all. I will really appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance.

I think you should try to focus on who you are and what you can contribute to Barnard. How will you make a difference there? How will you imprint yourself on others and the school?

Hey!

So I’m not completely sure. But my interpretation of the second question is that they want to know “What makes YOU different from every other applicant.” I agree with your friend.

You have seemingly wrote about a typical hardworking college student. Barnard is a rigorous school so I’m sure you won’t be the only one spending your life in the library. Also all the women applying there should be ready for a rigorous education. On top of all that, its NYC who isn’t going to be taking pictures? What makes you different? Why should they pick you instead of the other transfers?

Well, if you don’t feel like applying to Barnard at all, why do you need help?..

@2016BarnardMom and saxfanatic - Thank you for your help!
@Adversa- I didn’t mean that literally. I was just feeling depressed since my essays were not working out. Anyway, thanks.

Oh. Listen. Just write what you feel like. I almost dropped Barnard off my list when I was applying to colleges. I bet that’s how they filter out people who want to be here for wrong reasons.
Trust your heart!
