Supplemental Essay

Looking back at my supplemental essay for Bowdoin (I probably will regret looking back…), I’m not sure I’m satisfied with what I wrote.

The question was, of course, a “why Bowdoin” question.

I mentioned the strength of liberal arts, the diversity on campus, the acceptance of homosexuals, the ability to explore and the prestige of academics.

Is this good enough? How important is this essay? What esle did other people mention?

The supplemental essay's topic was "Describe what you expect your academic journey at Bowdoin to include."

This was quite difficult because I have not been to the Bowdoin campus at all and had to write such essay. I included the subject I want to major and its reason, and the number of words was about 150. I felt it was too short but I couldn't write more.

How did you get to know about the diversity on campus and the acceptance of homosexuals? From my research online, there seems no diversity on campus though the acceptance of homosexuals could be true.

It seems Borat could be a good candidate for Bowdoin :)

YEa that was the question, and I answered it like that, sorry. It is kinda similar to a "why Bowdoin," question, so I just kinda mixed them up.

Well, I made the entire essay a comparative (kinda) from my current high school to Bowdoin. And there's basically like 3 black kids, 2 Jewish people, 1 or 2 hispanics, and like 2 gay people in my school. So in comparision to my school (my school has like 500 students), Bowdoin's pretty diverse.

...and I just looked it over (again, I probably should stop, if I find an error I'll have a minor panic attack!), and read over the part about diversity... I didn't really mention at all diversity of race, religion, etc. in fact, I mentioned how I value more a college which embraces diversity of ideas as more important than diversity of merely superficial qualities, such as race. I guess Bowdoin fits in that, as would most liberal arts colleges.

My essay could have been better.

Oh well, I kinda doubt I'll get in here anyway.

What admission committees look at is always ambiguous because some say essay is most important whereas others say transcript and recommendations tell the most.

I too doubt my admission because Bowdoin is very competitive. I did my best though.
