Supplemental Question: Impact on Extended Family?

So for one of the Georgia Tech supplemental questions, it asks:

Tech’s motto is Progress and Service. We find that students who ultimately have a broad impact first had a significant one at home. What is your role in your immediate or extended family? And how have you seen evidence of your impact on them?

Would it be appropriate to apply this question to my impact on people who benefit from an organization I volunteer at? Or should I stick to literal family members? The place I was thinking about is a respite center for kids with special needs, and I believe I have a significant impact not only on the children but on their families as well, and I’ve even received multiple thank you cards from families. Basically I spend time with the kids and allow them to participate in more “normal” activities, and I’ve developed numerous meaningful friendships with the children themselves.

Hmm.,. it does seem to me that they are talking about “real” family, and trying to get at thise relationships. If you come from a small family, you could maybe stretch it and say you feel like you’ve added to it through these close relationships.

I would answer the question they asked and keep it to your family since that is what they asked. You may be able to incorporate this in if you are clever in your essay.
