Supplemental REC?

So can these be from anybody?
Friend? Family member?

bumpppleasee?

anybody know?

According to the Duke website,

Quote

We seek to understand and appreciate you as an individual. If there is a parent, sibling, other relative, or friend of yours who you think could help us do that, we would be happy to receive a one-page letter from one of them. This optional information will be considered in our understanding of you as a person, but will not be formally evaluated as part of your application.

I've seen recs sent in from parents, siblings, grandparents, family friends, uncles, aunts, neighbors, music teachers, dance teachers, coaches...anyone you can think of.

Is this supposed to have a " letter of recommendation" or a "why Duke" flavor? The one I did for my D is sort of like a biography...

definitely "letter of recommendation." the Why Duke explanation is for your daughter to write. i'm sure you could comment on why you think duke would be good for her, but you have to be very careful because you don't want to risk sounding like it was your decision or your influence that convinced your child to apply. admissions officers say it reflects badly on the candidate if it looks like the school is the parents' choice and not the student's. the Why Duke essay is where the student explains why she feels she would fit in. the letters of recommendation can attest to the student's independently developed interest in the school, but they should focus on telling important things about the candidate that aren't evident from the rest of the application.

Thank you!

its not the typical letter of recommendation
more of a i know someone with power, get me in
or a im supposed to walk on to a team there, get me in
or my dad (or anyone) works for so and so and is wealthy, get me in
not like a teacher talking about your talents, or so ive heard

Can it be from another teacher?

more of a i know someone with power, get me in

hmmm....that's something I think I'd only hear here...If that's true, counts us out, but I guess we'll send it anyway....

One of the ones Duke admissions talked about while we were visiting a couple years ago was from a younger sibling asking Duke to accept their sister/brother so they could have their room.:) It really can be anything....by the way, I believe they said they accepted the student:)
