Supplemental Recs

I was reading the CU website and it said don't send in sup recs unless they were from research/college class professors. I've been meaning to use a sup rec and I was wondering if this could be an exception. I have an internship at the Cornell Medical IT dept in manhattan and I'm going to get a pretty good rec from the CIO (my employer) of the dept. Would I be able to use this as an expection to their sup rec guideline?

I'm doing the same thing (well somewhat). I have over a thousand hours of community service and have won national awards for it so I'm getting a rec from my boss. I think it should be fine, after all what's the definition of research?

Send it in.

me too I'm getting a recommendation from my Supervisor at my intership. Since I'm going for economics I should at least send that in.

Cory, are you applying ED this year?

I sent one in from an acting teacher/my advisor.

I got in and I think his rec was the best. Go ahead and send it in.

then again, wouldn't that fall under "The Kid who doesn't follow instructions"?

ses, I'm sure not all ADofficers are the same. you probably was just lucky to have an ADofficer that didn't mind reading your additional recc && plus it was good anyway......from what you say

I come from a school where 20-25% of the graduating class matriculates to Ivies each year. Thus my college counselor knew what she was doing. She had me submit two recommendations from academic teachers, as recs from art teachers are not what colleges are looking for, and in addition send a glowing letter from another teacher who really knew me.

Please stop proliferating false information. You have yet to go through the college process, right? Unless you spend a lot of time in your school's guidance office or have older siblings, I would caution you NOT to provide advice to other prospective students. Odds are you will only confuse or mislead them.

Certainly sending extra recs just to send extra recs is bad (one admissions officer cited an applicant who had her dentist write a letter about how she was a diligent flosser), but if a letter from a non-academic teacher, advisor, or employer would provide NEW and POSITIVE information about an applicant there is no reason not to send it.

S/T/F/U && Can you stop trying to make yourself look good by putting others down.
When I called Columbia's office of admission they said they strictly encourage students not to send a third reccomendation && they didn't say why

asking questions is the same as going through the process shaking my head

May I submit supplementary recommendations?
We discourage the submission of additional recommendations, as our admission decision will be based primarily on the required recommendations from your high school teachers and secondary school/guidance counselor. In general, we recommend the submission of a supplementary recommendation only if the writer has worked with you in a research or college course capacity.

'Discourage' is not synonymous with forbid.

alright thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a huge restriction or anything. Hopefully it can help me, and balance out my teacher recs since they might not be outstanding.

Yes soauthentic I will be applying ED. I assume you are as well. Good luck to you. Hopefully we'll see each other next year hehe.

Ditto ^

-Good Luck

Aww ^^

(That just seemed like an aww moment to me. Idk why.)

haha

I better see you there too karen

I wish! I think dreaming is the only way i'm ever going to "attend" Columbia. Good luck to you and So Authentic!

Question- when I send in a supplemental rec what form should I use? Should I print out an extra teachers rec form and give that to the writer or should I not bother with a form and just ask her for a letter?

Thanks Karen && you better apply because schools work in mysterious ways. You never know, the first word you might see on a Columbia letter is Congratulations!

So apply && good luck to you as well. Also, somebody watch out for when the Class of 2012 application comes out

yeah i'm really ****ed off at columbia because of the app. Last friday they said it would be available online on the 1st of august. So yesterday i went there and it said "available after August 1st". Of course I was kinda disappointed but in the end it all worked out. (Not have to do the app gave me the opportunity to go shopping and go to Dairy Queen =D) Needless to say I was looking forward to today. Well, it still isn't up there! When I do see it up there though I'll start a thread about it.

End of rant. And of course I'm applying! My whole room is columbia'd out. (I did this cool thing on one of the doors to my closet where it's covered in the lions. I meticulously cut them out from the bags they give you at the bookstore. Oh and I have pendants all over the place.) If I wasn't going to apply that would have been such a waste of money!
