Supplementary dance class

Do students who come in to Elon as strong dancers (10+ years strict training) find it necessary to supplement dance training outside of the regular MT classes? If so how do they do it? With majors? In the community? Thanks.

You may wish to contact nydancemom as her D is a particularly strong and well trained dancer who is finishing up the BFA in MT program at Elon.

My son was not an advanced dancer going into the MT program but came out a very advanced dancer (now is in his last week as dancer, Mike, in A Chorus Line national tour). He took as many dance classes as he could fit in his schedule at Elon, many of them electives, and well above the required minimum classes. They trained him well! He probably danced 3 to 5 hours daily during most of his time at Elon. These were all classes offered on campus. There was no need to supplement off campus. There were a couple of academic classes on dance that he didn’t take, or otherwise he would have had at least a dance minor, if not double major. The teachers are outstanding. I cannot even describe Eric’s progress in dance while there - you would have had to witness it yourself (the before and after!).

Ericsmom I did witness the “after” having seen Eric in the show on tour and it’s just amazing to realize that he wasn’t always a dancer. Chorus Line and Cats have to be the two biggest real dancer shows - there’s no way to fake it there! I had no idea Eric (or any other MT student) was able to get in that many hours of dancing a day. That’s what my girl is used to and it will make her day/night to hear that. Thanks! THANKS!!! :)

Thanks - you are too sweet!

The people who know Eric from the little bit of dance he took in HS who saw him on tour and the directors at our local equity theatre who had him in shows during HS and again after his junior year at Elon (when he came back here to do Tommy) went on and on about Eric’s advancement in dance! It made them more impressed with Elon than they already were!
