Supplementary Materials

I am planning on applying to some more competitive schools, such as UNC CH and Emory. My GPA unweighted (predicting senior yr) is 3.67 and weighted is 3.9-4 (at new school there aren’t many AP’s offered) Currently waiting for ACT but predicted score is low 30’s, based on PLAN. Will retake if necessary, my goal is 34+. I have some good EC’s, but my main focus outside of school has been ballet throughout high school. I would consider myself to be accomplished as a dancer with enough skill to go professional, and I know colleges don’t want to see supplementary videos unless they reflect a high amount of talent and skill. Would a supplement submission make-or-break an application? Would it do me any favors? Just wondering.

Depends–research the schools you apply to because some are fine with supplementary materials and some are not. Stanford, for instance, strongly discourages sending extra crap. That said, being a pro-level ballet dancer is awesome and should help you as an applicant. Very impressive level of determination, discipline, and focus, for instance, all of which are great indicators of a successful life.

@primapup8 Based on my interactions with smaller schools, sending a video separately to be included makes a lot of sense. Especially if you visit and get a business card from someone in admissions.

Being really focused on one thing is better than a smorgasbord of things everyone else does. The amount of time and energy that goes into your dancing should be carefully and fully documented.

By all means send it.
