But it’s probably not B and N’s fault? They don’t want to lose the sale! One story I read mentioned BN specifically having a hard time getting stock
The book supply chain is well documented to be a problem. Unfortunately, many titles are printed overseas and they are suffering from the container ship logjam.
Bookstores were urged in August to order as many copies as needed for the holidays, rather than ordering a fall order and then restocking. There is a good chance you won’t be able to get certain titles for Christmas if you don’t buy them now.
The good news is, your indie store will happily sell you lots of other titles that are in stock!
I just picked up my Butterball turkey from Target curbside yesterday. They had all sizes in stock. There will just be 3 of use, so I ordered a 10-16 lb bird. They gave me a 12.4 lb bird @ $1.49/lb. I just rechecked and they are now out of the 20+lb size.
I picked up two 16lb turkeys this morning at Walmart after my local grocery store didn’t have any Monday when I went shopping there. 1.49/lb for Butterballs. One will be eaten at med school boy’s place when we do Thanksgiving there and one will be at FIL’s on Thanksgiving.
I picked up Christmas hams (Fricks) when we were up in NY. To us, it’s the best tasting ham ever, but they don’t sell it around me so it was planned early on to get it on the trip. I don’t know if there will be a shortage or not.
Now I’m wondering if I should buy things like cranberry sauce ahead of time. We make our own stuffing, use real potatoes for mashed potatoes - ditto yams - so I think we’re set for the rest of the meals. We’re not picky on other veggies.
I also bought myself Anchor Hocking glass storage containers at Walmart this morning (set of 15 with lids). I’ve been wanting those for a while as we learn more about just how bad plastic storage is for foods, etc. Walmart was out of a lot in the household aisles, but had 3 packages of those left. It might have been helpful that these are Made in the USA and don’t have to wait in line at a port.
Otherwise, we’re not buying Christmas gifts this year - unless plane tickets count. The kids and their wives/SO are invited to spend time with us in the USVI in Feb if they want. That’s their gift. H and I decided when we were married that we didn’t want to give gifts to each other. Our Feb trips are our gift to ourselves. We do still fill stockings, but that’s mainly candy.
Interesting. Must be PNW regional. Dressers, high chairs, poang chairs, tops and bottoms to cabinets but not the cabinets were not available. I read they are having supply chain issues and trouble getting raw materials, too.
First world problem: There’s a tennis ball shortage. My friends and I are having trouble finding the balls we need to keep playing and getting our exercise.
Cat food is also an issue as far as the flavor my cat loves is concerned (Purina One - blue bag, salmon flavor). He won’t eat anything else - yes, we’ve tried - including pretty much every type/brand of canned food as well as kibbles. It becomes expensive chicken food (unless it’s chicken, then it gets composted). Our store was out of it during the first shortage and he lost a lot of weight. Fortunately he likes raw eggs and pork from won ton soup.
Now my store is out of it again. I found some in NY when we were there and bought it for him thinking it was a short term out of stock item. If I’d known it wasn’t I’d have bought more bags. Walmart had it in a larger size, so I got that. I’m not sure how much he’ll get through before it goes stale. After that, I’ll have to see if there’s any online or elsewhere. He’s an old cat that could meet his demise any day and no one would be surprised, so I don’t want to buy a lot ahead of time.
Our S has been experiencing these supply line issues for a while now. He leased a new apartment in the Palo Alto area in June. Starting from scratch he had to purchase just about everything. Furniture-wise it took months to receive all his purchases and he has yet to receive his nightstand (estimated mid November). All of his purchases were from Design Within Reach and Restoration Hardware, so we were surprised they did not have better availability. One good move he made was to purchase a car in June as inventories of models he was considering are scarce and prices very high compared to what he paid in June.
I tried to buy a chair from my usual furniture store, then from Lazy Boy. I was told it could be 6 to 9 months before I could get one.
I also ordered some Hunter Douglas blinds. They should be here soon, but the store told me not to order wooden ones or I could be waiting 6 to 9 months.
Not to mention, I really need a new car but the one I want isn’t available anywhere. No chips. So I’ll limp along in my old one until next years’ model comes out.
I’m furnishing a new home. The sofa that I ordered in June should be here in November. The beds for the guest rooms that I ordered in September should be here in December. The dining table that I ordered in October might be here in February, but I’m not holding my breath.
Re: Christmas - Last year, I preordered DS the new Lego Star Wars video game for Christmas. I was surprised when it didn’t arrive and discovered that its release had been moved to this Christmas. A couple of months ago, I was notified that the release is now 2023. Good grief. That order is probably getting cancelled.
Just picked up our new ceiling fan. It took 3 months to get it. Hope it lives up to the expectations.
I just ordered a sofa and chairs from CR Laine, in NC, and was quoted 7 months.
My mother is getting new windows for her house. The deal is that one brother will install them, and since he works in construction, he ordered them to be delivered to his house, he’ll drive them down (lives about 3 hours away) and install them. Was all supposed to happen Oct 15. No windows. Still no word on when they’ll get here and it will be mighty chilly that weekend in late Nov/Dec when they arrive and we have to rip half a wall out. Also, he starts his winter job soon (skiing) so will be harder to have the helpers he needs.
It is still strange for me to go to a store and see whole sections empty, and the weirdest stuff. Canned pineapple, certain types of soup but the others are full. Today a lot of the shampoo section was empty.
I need to replace a SubZero wine cooler and ice maker (both are in my pantry). These appliances are 16 years old and the repair guy said that it wasn’t worth it to fix them. I called a number of appliance stores to see if these models still existed and if anyone had them in stock. Of course, no store had them. I placed an order with an appliance store where I had purchased a Speed Queen washer/dryer and a Miele dishwasher earlier this year (it’s been six months and I still don’t have a dishwasher.)
The salesman said that the ETA for the wine cooler and ice maker was September 2022!! He said the shortages/delays for appliances and also furniture and bedding were mostly due to a foam shortage. There are five companies in Texas/Louisana that make the chemical needed for the foam in these products. The storm and subsequent electrical outage in Texas/Louisana at the beginning of this year put these companies out of business for a long time and they’re still not up to speed. The only good news was that the salesman said if a customer ahead of me in the cue cancelled his/her order, he’d move me to that spot, since I was a good customer.
My D keeps telling me to stop complaining–affluent, suburban, white woman problems and all that.
We have a 19 year old leather sofa and we needed to re-stuff the cushions. I took one to a fabric store in Philadelphia and received a quote. Because she was backed up we waited until we were going on vacation to schedule them and 3 months later the price had doubled. She told me about the foam issue. We did find a place over the bridge in NJ that is almost exclusively foam. They had a much better, but still higher than the earlier quote, price on foam.
So, your post confirmed the foam shortage for me, lol!
Grocery store out of honeycrisp apples, even though they were invented nearby. All other apples are available.
I was at my local farm market and they had bins of honey crisps. Northern Michigan and grown locally.
Tons of honeycrisp at my suburban Seattle Costco but not a single Cosmic Crisp in sight. Makes me wonder if that PNW heat wave affected some varieties more than others. Lots of crops were lost to the heat I hear.
We ordered our Subzero wine fridge in Jan or Feb and just received it a couple of weeks ago, so I well believe it!
The hardwood we ordered for the upstairs bedrooms at the beginning of September is supposed to be here sometime in December, but I’m not holding my breath.
