surrounding neighborhoods

How are the neighborhoods surrounding Rice? Is Rice in a good or bad part of the city?

Rice Village is a wonderful area of the city.

Rice is located in one of the most affluent areas of Houston.

The Rice campus is bordered to the east by the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical complex, comprised of more than 13 separate hospitals and 2 medical schools. On the west side of the campus is Rice Village, an eclectic/upscale mix of shops and restaurants within walking distance to the school. To the north and the south of the campus are beautiful residential neighborhoods with tree-lined streets. A light rail line is located on one side of campus with easy access to downtown, the museum district, and the football stadium. Also located nearby is a large urban park with a zoo and public golf course.

Rice is located in a beautiful safe neighborhood.

Rice is undeniably located in the most beautiful area of Houston.(perhaps the only legitimately beautiful area of Houston)

the surrounding areas are mostly good...but i wont bs u..take the wrong turn and u will end up in a gheto looking part of town where we always lock our doors when we drive by. not all of it is far from the bad parts but the closer areas are mainly beautiful, the med center, etc. but why would that matter...you dont have to go there. but yea man, there are some bad parts. my mom lives downtown about 4 miles from rice and I have ventured into some parts where i was scared of the peopel i saw.

Rice's surroundings invite a false sense of security. You're in one of the nation's largest cities and appropriate caution should be observed. Campus itself is generally very safe. West U and the Village areas are, also, generally safe.

But there have been major crimes all around the little hidden campus; sexual assaults, murder, car thefts, muggings. Be aware of the chances, don't be stupid (i.e. jogging at 4AM alone), and it's a safe place.

yes...thats what i was saying...around the fourth ward and third ward areas...watch out! somebody was killed in the macgregor area the other day. but the campus is safe. just use common sense..one can tell where is dangerouns and when it is.

Are you sure? I was under the impression that there were 13 hospitals in TMC.

Okay, I'm not sure why you want to split hairs here, but when I mentioned "more than 13 hospitals" I was referring to some of the specialized inpatient providers (see below copied from the TMC website). This number is growing, by the way, as new providers are built such as the new heart hospital being built by Hermann Hospital. Regardless, it's an incredible resource for those Rice students interested in research in medicine, as well as other fields. My son did some computer science research as a high school student in the Department of Biostatistics and Applied Mathematics at the cancer hospital last summer.

2005 Facts and Figures

42 + member institutions
includes 13 hospitals and 2 specialized patient facilities

5.2 million patient visits in 2004

10,456 international patients in 2004

6,344 beds; 373 bassinets

4,000+ physicians

65,300+ employees in 2004

11,000+ registered nurses
and another 15,000 serve as LVNs, clinical caregivers, technicians and support staff

12,000+ volunteers
contribute annually an estimated $15 million in service

11 educational institutions
Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Houston System, Rice University, Texas A&M University System, Texas Woman's University, Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, Houston Community College System and Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, part of the Houston Independent School District

Not trying to split any hairs. Just curiosity, wanting to know how many hospitals there were. "More than 13" could mean anything. So it is 13. Thanks.

No, it's more than 13.

No, it's more than 13.

[/quote]

Okay. How many more? I've checked; the website says 13. TMC knows how many hospitals are in their complex. If there are more, why wouldn't they report them? If there are 14, they'd report 14; if 15, 15. Etc. No?

(This isn't worth bickering about, BTW.)

Ah, Leonard. We meet again.
I'm still waiting to hear what the name of this mystery top-ranked college is!

I haven't said they're giving me what I "want." The financial aid officer I spoke with was very accomodating, however, or certainly seemed to be (and was fully aware that the FAFSA results can be off base, didn't even try to pretend otherwise).

I wouldn't want to interrupt your cheerleading.

Nah, that's not it. Tulane! It's Tulane. Okay, now I'm happy.

No. She was admitted to Tulane, with a fine offer, indeed. But that's not the one I was referring to in the message you pasted.

so we are playing guess the dude's mystery college now? that reminds me of mystery skittles :D

Well Leonard, I got $24,000 odd from Rice yesterday and add my EFC of $13,000 to that, thats the full price. So, Im very happy with my aid package!!! (u were scaring me a bit before.... :))

Yeah I just got my fin aid package as well and I am so excited. $33,000 in grants!! It just reaffirmed my belief that Rice is really the best school of all. I seriously doubt that any other school would have given me that much aid.
