Sustainability Fields

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows the best programs in sustainability fields that are offered by colleges/universities in the Northeast. These majors can range from environmental engineering to environmental science, environmental policy, and sustainability studies. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Two schools in the northeast with strong programs are:
SUNY ESF and Middlebury

Thank You @wisteria100

Second Middlebury.

UVM (University of Vermont) is well known for its environmental science

Middlebury has the oldest Environmental Studies program in the country. It also has Bill McKibben, 350.org, and (by the end of this year) carbon neutrality.

Bowdoin is solid with regard to sustainability, it certainly changed my kid’s life. There are many schools in the NE, both public and private, with solid credentials and connections.

I’m biased because I’ll be going here this year, but Connecticut College has a strong environmental science program and is not as tough for admissions as Midd.

What size school are you interested in? What’s your family’s budget? Will you need merit aid? Are you interested in Greek life, D1 sports, or other social “atmosphere” considerations?

@arcadia @goldy410 @urbanslaughter @morandi Thank You for the suggestions! I didn’t know Middlebury had such a strong program. UVM is another one I am definitely considering, a lot of students from my school graduate and attend there.

@usualhopeful my families budget is low, but I have been told by many people that I qualify for Merit aid. There’s a local scholarship that pays full tuition where I live, and I am hopeful that I can acquire it, but it’s always better to be safe. In terms of social/size attributes, I am not concerned with my college having those features. I am a project and research driven student

Sustainability/environmental studies/environmental science is very broad…

The current head of the EPA and a number of senior managers are Tufts Alums. One of the lead authors of the Nobel winning IPCC report retired from Tufts’ Fletcher School and now is affiliated with the School of Engineering.

Tufts has a broad set of offerings including majors and minors in:

Environmental Engineering

Environmental Health (spans liberal arts and engineering)

One of the first multi-disciplinary Environmental Studies in the country with 5 tracks:
…1. Environmental Science
…2. Sustainability, Policy and Equity
…3. Environmental Communication
…4. Food Systems, Nutrition and Environment
…5. Self Designed

The Environmental Studies program is set up as a “second major” designed to be taken in conjunction with another traditional major. This allows additional breadth and flexibility without sacrificing depth. It also helps prevent the “jack of all trades, master of none” phenomenon that you need to be careful of with some interdisciplinary majors. The downside is that It does result in a lot of requirements, although I think one will find that most strong environmental studies programs have more requirements than traditional majors.

I believe Bowdoin may also have their program set up as a second major…
