Hello, I am applying to SVA for photography. I have seen/spoken with others who also applied to SVA for photography, and am fairly confident my portfolio is enough to meet their standards for admission. However, I am very concerned, as my GPA is 2.1. While my SAT is decent ( CR 640 M 630 W 570), it seems that they care very little about test scores, and more about academic success. However, I've heard differing reports as to whether they actually consider one's GPA as a major admissions factor. If my portfolio is strong enough will they look past my poor academic record?

If you look at their stats, almost 1/3 had GPA’s between 2.5-2.99, and 12% had 2 - 2.49. Your SATs are much better than most (according to the stats), and if you have a good protoflio, which is probably the most important thing, and a good essay, I’d say you have a good chance.

Also, if your GPA showed improvement in the past year or 2, that also helps.

spicer492, I am a current SVA photo student, and you (or anyone else) are welcome to PM me your portfolio if you would like me to take a look at it. As far as your GPA is concerned, it is a little low, but I do know people who have lower GPAs and have been accepted into SVA as their portfolio is strong. Your SATs are fine. The most important factor for admissions is your portfolio; if you have a strong portfolio, good essay, and a solid work ethic, then you have a good chance at getting accepted into SVA.

I am willing to answer any questions anybody may have about SVA.

Spicer, there are only a few art schools that really emphasize the GPA. SVA isn’t one of them. If you have strong SATS, as you have, and have a strong portfolio, I don’t think you will have a program. Now if you were applying to those schools that are very GPA oriented such as RISD, MICA, Cincinnati, UCLA, WashU etc, you would have a problem. However, I would bet that you have a decent shot at SVA with your credentials as long as you have a good portfolio.

Whoops sorry for typo in post number 4. I should have said, “I don’t think you will have a problem” and not said “program.”

Thanks handemom and bmc I will likely take you up on that offer once I get my portfolio slightly more organized. Also, thank you taxguy, that is what I figured I just needed some reassurance. And by the way I see you are from Rockville… Bethesda resident here.
