There is a question on the Common App supplement for Swat that says, "Do you intend to enroll in a degree program your first year?". I don't understand this question... what are they asking? Are they asking if you intend to take a gap year? Or... if you intend to declare a major in your freshman year? Or... something else? Any insight would be appreciated!

I’m not sure that this question actually appears on the Swat supplement as opposed to on the common app, but in any case, the answer is “yes.” If you are going to attend Swarthmore you will be enrolling in a degree granting program, either a B.A. or a B.S. You don’t have to declare a major until second semester sophomore year.

That question does not appear on Swarthmore’s actual supplement (not the common app):

Yes, it is on the Common App. It is grouped with the Swat specific questions like whether the student is going to apply for financial aid. I think it is a question that colleges can choose to see or not (and if they choose not, then the question is not asked for that college). It is the first time it has shown up in any of my D’s applications (other colleges apparently do not want to see that one). I think momof3sons has it right regarding what they are asking.
