Swim recruiting questions

i was wondering if anyone here is interested in being recruited by uchicago swim team? Will coach give an official call in July? I heard they already start offering official trip ? My D is also a swimmer and she has exchanged several emails with the coach but no calls, she is so afraid that coach will not consider her. Any inputs here is appreciated.

The best way is to be direct with the coach. She should call or send an email and tell the coach that UChicago is at the top of her list of schools (if that is true). She can say she wants to see the campus and ask if she will get an invitation to one of the fall recruiting trips. It’s much easier to be invited to one of those trips than to actually be seriously recruited and accepted. It helps to let the coach know she is serious about UChicago. Good luck to her!

Thanks so for your reply

Wash U and U Chicago might fit academically, but they are extremely competitive for swimming. Isn’t MIT also?

WUSTL and Chicago are generally in the same class as Williams and JHU. My son was pursued by all of them. I’d say that MIT is closer to a Brown or Cornell in terms of their recruiting habits. – they are a bit more selective (i.e., looking for faster swimmers). Until recently, MIT didn’t bend much for recruits. That seems to have changed a little in recent years. Just my sense of it.

Anyone go through the pre-read process? Would be interested to hear other swimmers experience with getting recruited at highly selective D3 schools.

Can you give some advice on interaction with coach/team? In my daughter’s case, she has received several “open” recruiting type emails - like “here our upcoming campus visit dates so you have them on your calendar” and also “here is our open call line times and number if you want to ask us any questions” but then when she is directly emailing with the coach, the responses are non-committal and very slow - which you can imagine is causing drama and worry. She even called the open call time line and left a message with no call back. These mixed messages are confusing! Any suggestions?

what is this process, for those of us not familiar?

@Wiscohio At this stage of the process, it’s probably best to avoid being too heavily invested in any one school or coach. You’ll definitely learn that some coaches are good at online communication and some are definitely not. And some are good at recruiting and some are not. And there are good programs and bad.

The fact that coaches are reaching out to your daughter is a great sign. But be sure to go on the offensive, too, and reach out to those schools that you and your daughter like.

Thanks all for your input! Finally getting a chance to follow up on this thread. We did wait until this week, after my daughter’s local champs meet to get updated, tapered short course times. My kid had the meet of her life, had some incredible drops, and now just 3 days later has started catching the eyes of the college coaches. She’s started getting e-mails from schools we hoped would be possibilities for her.

Of course we know that all of this means very little right now, but it’s a little exciting for my daughter to realize that she really is in a position to be swimming in college.

Goals this week in between the typical holiday doubles are to respond to the coaches that have e-mailed her and to submit recruiting data and send e-mails to the other teams she might be interested in.

On a side note - we are in the Pacific Northwest. There is a parent here who did a presentation about the college recruiting process, with some information specific to those of us up here (we are a bit of an island with few schools having swim teams, few college coaches watching meets etc.) His presentation is worth the time if you happen to be on a team that has him speak to the parents or if you go to a meet where he’s giving his presentation.

Great news jmtabb. One good game or meet can really make a difference.

I recently posted on another swim thread that does not see a lot of action. I’m looking for other swim recruits and parents who would like to join the conversation or have some advice to offer. If you are also looking for camaraderie in this school/swim search, check here:

Is it necessary to be trained from swim schools if I wish to introduce my daughter to a competitive swimming environment? How about taking [url=<a href=“https://www.penguswimschool.com/%5Dprivate”>https://www.penguswimschool.com/]private swim lessons at Houston?

@juliamarshall001 how old is your D? We started with our local swim club at age 7 (which is pretty late comparing to most of his team mates, but I think there are benefits of not starting too early). Texas has pretty strong club swimming tradition in general, try to find a good club that is not too far from your home.

I have a son who just finished 1st year on Varsity but has plenty of time (Grad23; we can start varsity swim as a 7th grader) to think about all of this. However I’m following you conversation trying to be proactive if he decides it’s for him. Is it just me or are Mens Swimming Teams few and far between?! Because football, basketball and baseball take up 3/4 of the ‘athlete’ spots?

A few schools have dropped men’s swimming in the last few years. N Dakota, Buffalo are two.

Most D3’s have men’s and women’s teams. In that case, school fit is the most important factor. Up through freshman year in high school, your son’s first priority should be good grades. Academic achievement will ensure those athletic opportunities are there if he decides he wants them.

Thanks! Academics are a priority in our house and he’s actually already taken the ACT once for DukeTIP and is in all honors. Trying to decide whether to be in the IB program in high school (like his older sister) or go heavy APs but either way academics will be stressed. It’s my understanding the D2/3 programs cannot give scholarships, correct?
