what's so bad about learning to swim? i don't get it

i would just rather not fail my first test at ND and take something more suited to my interests.

^^^Think of it as 'placement' and not 'test'.

Knowing how to swim could save you at some future point in your life...and it could save the person (relative, friend or stranger) who will not have to jump in and try to save you.

Also, you look like less of a noob at pool parties.

kevdude, that's the best answer I've heard on this thread.
Don't get pwned at pool parties...learn to swim.

Who swims at pool parties? Other than marco polo, why would you need extra swimming endurance and speed? Only the people who cannot swim at all, not even doggy paddle, will get owned at the parties (and probably drown when they get thrown into the deep end). So idk..... lol

That's the point we're driving at. The only people who would have to take swimming lessons would be people who could reasonably considered to be under threat of drowning.

wait, so do u have to do backstroke at all? or just freestyle? i got a bit confused

Dude Kev I get what you are saying, but what I have heard from you and others its not the that easy. I mean especially the backstroke part. 50 meters!!! Thats alot, especially for people like me, who live in florida and know how to swim but never took lessons or found a reason to swim in backstroke.

You will pass. If you don't, I will eat my officially licensed, overpriced, faux-weathered blue-gray Notre Dame raised insignia hat.

agreed...unless you are content being a noob for your whole life

I'm confused. Doggy paddle is acceptable or not? Would taking the class boost my GPA? :)

No, because you don't get any credit for PE.

The biggest tip I can give for freshmen taking the swim test is to take your time when swimming the laps. people try to rush it b/c they want it to be over with, which can cause them to die out halfway through. go at your own pace and you'll be fine.

I'll revive this thread before too much time passes. For those of you that are freshman, I am sure that by now you must have taken the swim test. Can you share with others/future reference your impressions of the test? Next fall, there will be another thread started about this and while it is still fresh, perhaps you can offer insight for future students.

Basically, don't dawdle, look like you know what you're doing...swim as fast as you can on the first lap, and you'll pass. the fact that you have never done a correct stroke in your entire life because you didn't have a swimming lesson since the age of 5 will no longer matter. you will then be able to sign up for other exciting classes such as yoga and contemporary topics...the first part wasn't sarcastic, i'm actually looking forward to yoga

i heard a rumor that jonoam failed the swim test

just something that's goin around

i would recommend doing the breaststroke/elementary backstroke. I've swam my whole life, not on teams or anything but I know how to, and I was a lot more tired than I thought after 4 laps of crawl/back crawl. Just pace yourself and you will be fine. If you look like you know what your doing, act confident, etc., it;ll be ok

i lied. jonoam passed with flying colors. she's freaking amazing
