Switching Dorms

So I just found out my housing assignment is Warren Hall, which at first I was upset about, but later I found out that I've been put in a single room. I don't care what hall I'm in at this point, I just don't want to be in a single room. How easy is it to switch? Does the housing staff work with you before school starts?

For a single room you might have some luck. A lot of people would kill for a single, lol. So they might be willing to work with you to switch with someone that just went with a random roommate that wants a single. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

I am absolutely not trying to dissuade you from what you want, in fact I totally get it. But I will just point out that if it doesn’t work out to change, you can still have as much of a roommate type experience as if you did have one, or at least close. My D was in a single in JL her 2nd year and she was with other people all the time in their rooms, in the lounge, and of course just around campus, which is where most people tend to hang anyway. Just saying it wouldn’t be a disaster, but definitely let housing know you are willing to give up your single to someone that really wants one.

If the first person you talk to isn’t helpful, don’t be afraid to keep moving up the chain, right up to a dean or similar position. The higher you go, the more attuned they are to focusing on freshmen (and all students) being happy at Tulane. Not saying most of the staff isn’t as well, but there are exceptions, like in any big organization.

Thank you. I understand what you’re saying, but I just feel like I’m moving across the country and living in a room by myself is not going to be an option. So I really hope they are able to work with me…

@laney333 - Definitely use that statement to them. Very understandable. Let us know how you make out.

Can someone comment on Warren Hall in general as a dorm for Freshmen (not single room). Thanks.

Only that the rooms are said to be a bit larger than most of the other freshman dorm rooms, and that the entire wing is for freshman while the other wing is for sophomores, at least in the recent past. So it seems to me, at least, it isn’t that different than JL (except it is coed by floor and JL isn’t). It is older than all but JL, but then again we are talking about all the freshman dorms being pretty old now except for Wall and of course the brand new one, Zimpel (apologies, I am forgetting the new name for Zimpel). But Zimpel is also divided by wing into freshmen and sophomores, and I think Wall is a mix too, right? Or is Wall all freshmen? Hard to keep it straight because it does change with enrollments.

Anyway, bottom line is that I would think Warren would be more or less like any other hall bath, co-ed dorm, except maybe a little less “wild” than Sharp and Monroe. I haven’t seen the common areas in Warren in a long time, so someone else would have to update that.

I can tell you that Wall is not all freshman. My sophomore is in Wall - much to his dismay - because in his mind, it is a freshman dorm. But it is my understanding that it is mixed and always has been. You see - it never ends! At least he got his first choice freshman year and is with three friends that he chose to be with.

The job of housing placement has got to be a fairly tedious process and one nearly impossible to make everyone happy or to complete without glitches. I do know that the personnel in Housing seem to care very much about the process and try to do a good job. Our son will be an incoming freshman and went through the process of completing the applications (including 8 essays for Greenbaum!) for both Wall and Greenbaum, Living/Learning communities. In the end, he was accepted to both communities and then had to formally decline Wall via a computer link. Over the ensuing weeks, at various times, he went on to receive numerous emails addressed to “Greenbaum resident”, or some such similar salutation. Then on Thursday evening, when he signed in to the system to see his room/roommate assignment, amazingly he had been assigned to Wall; clearly some sort of error in processing or duplication had occurred. When we contacted the people in Housing to make sense of the situation, they were very apologetic and reassuring about the error, promising to remedy the situation and that indeed he will be in Greenbaum. It has got to be a tricky process with lots of nuance for certain circumstances.

Today S got his room assignment and roommate for Greenbaum finalized…took them several days to get back to him remedying the error…but as they say"all’s well that ends well"

Good deal! Is this a roommate of choice or random? No reason, just curious.

Random, although perhaps being a part of the LLC played into placement in some way. Apparently the roommate is a freshman as well; the 2 other suitemates appear to both be sophomores…hopefully the mix in the dorm will provide a good mix of freshman optimism and upperclassmen wisdom…fingers crossed

Oh, that is interesting. I didn’t realize they were mixing sophs into the suites, although not the rooms. From what someone else had said they were supposedly going to put all the freshmen in one wing and the sophs in another. Either bad info or they changed plans. Like you, I hope it will be a good thing for some guidance. On the minus side that dorm is very close to The Boot… Hopefully the sophs will only be a good influence.
