Unfortunately I have been denied full acceptance to the college of my choice, but I have been offered a program which would allow me to transfer to the main campus after a year. The only issue with this program is that it does not offer mechanical engineering (my intended major), so I would have to pursue a different major in the field of engineering for two years before being able to switch my major to mechanical engineering. I was hoping someone could tell me which of these following majors have the most in common with mechanical engineering (for the first two years) in order to main my eventual switch as painless as possible? The options are as follows:
computer science- electrical
Electrical engineering
Electronic systems technology
Industrial distribution
Manufacturing & mechanical engineering technology
Multidisciplinary engineering technology
Nuclear engineering
Ocean engineering
Thank you for your time!
First two years, as in your freshman and sophomore years?
First, compare the curriculum for each of these majors with ME at YOUR school. Curriculum can vary by school, even ABET programs.
If it’s your freshman and sophomore years, then ME shares most of the same classes as any other engineering major. Stay away from the “technology” majors as they likely do NOT share many of the same core classes (less math).
Otherwise the most similar will likely be Nuclear and Electrical. The curriculum for these two majors don’t start to seriously diverge from ME until the 3rd year.
If you were admitted to a college where you would be into mechanical engineering directly, then I would seriously consider going there. I would assume that you have to maintain a minimum GPA to be able to transfer into mechanical engineering at the college you are looking at. That sounds risky considering that you were not admitted directly into mechanical engineering.
