All in! Take care of my DD Syracuse.

Hey guys, I would really appreciate it if someone would be able to give me the breakdown on these two schools and help me in my decision. I am currently a freshman at another NY state school, but I am transferring in the fall.

Up until yesterday, I was set on attending Syracuse university with the hopes of graduating from the Newhouse school of communications. I want to become a talent agent/manger in the entertainment industry, and I know Newhouse would be great for that. They also have great internship placement and alumni connections upon graduation. I also know the social aspect of Syracuse is very fun. In addition, if I never get into Newhouse (it’s top 3 in the nation for communications) then I would graduate with liberal arts, which is still good from there I think. The downside is that it’s private and costs more than 50k a year. After what my parents can afford, I’ll owe about 100k in students loans.

I just recently got into binghamton. Binghamton is the ivy league of NY state schools, great education for the money, but kind of lacks a communication aspect. Also, if I save all that money by going here, I’ll have the option of law school.

Can you guys tell me what you think in terms of tuition, education, Newhouse, and employment after graduation?

Thanks!!!

From what I have seen Newhouse has really high employment after graduation. Even thought Binghamton is a’lot cheaper you will have a’lot more opportunities in Hollywood due the the alumni network of Syracuse. A good alternative is to go to community college for 2 years and than transfer into Syracuse. I’m also really interested in working in the entertainment industry and Syracuse has a semester in Los Angeles where you get to intern at a major studio or talent agency. http://lasemester.syr.edu

@PKramer15 sorry for the delayed response, if you can manage a lot of classes (which might be tough for you to judge right now) you’ll be fine. I complain about it, but honestly I waste a lot of time, and still have plenty of time to hang out and go out. It really depends on what you want to get out of school. You can do the bare minimum and do fine, or you can try really hard, but you’ll likely have to sacrifice some things. It just gets tough (when you’re old enough) that you have friends going to bars on Tuesday nights because they majored in Basket Weaving and don’t actually have real work to worry about, and meanwhile you’re balancing like 3-4 on going assignments on top of group projects and classes, and all you want to do is hang out for a night.

You’ll have lots of fun either way, I stuck with the dual because I cannot rationalize a degree costing $50,000. With two degrees, it feels like I’m paying $25,000 per degree, which is what school should really cost (but that’s a discussion for another day). Anyways, it depends on what you want to do. From what I can tell, 2 degrees is better than 1 in the “real” world.

Ok so my daughter got into SU but into her second choice major (communications and rhetorical studies). Her first and only real choice was television, radio, film at Newhouse. She is a great student earning high honor roll, 3.9 gpa, 29 act, lots of ec, ap classes, leadership, top 10% of her HS class. She got accepted into 9 of 9 schools that she applied to and in some cases got asked to join the schools honor programs. So i’m baffled as to why she didn’t get in. Is there anyone out there that has started at SU and then transferred into Newhouse? I would love to hear how that went… if it even happens. Are there any pointers that anyone can provide us on how to make that happen? Is it worth a call to the school and complain or see if there is a way to get her in? Thanks in advance of your replies!

My understanding is that admission to Newhouse is far more competitive than admission to SU generally. I suspect that the ACT score of 29 was sufficiently low that it could not be overcome by the other aspects of the application.

Has SU sent its admission letters/e-mails??? I haven’t heard anything

@lawgirl3 They sent their first wave of e-mails this past Friday. Another wave will come out this Friday and the following Friday.

Manordad: many, many students start at another school at Syracuse with the intention of transferring into Newhouse…

Procedure: after first semester freshman year, you can request a transfer…students are admitted purely based on GPA that first semester; they take purely from the highest to the lowest until they run out of room(don’t know exact numbers)…

Some of the kids “game” the system by taking VERY easy classes first semester ( based on other students they know there) but end up struggling with all the requirements, etc when they get into Newhouse (especially the rigor of the writing required)…

Your child sounds like the exact type of student that would excel and have a fairly easy time transferring in…would really depend on where else she was accepted whether it makes sense…

Does anyone but me think that “waves” of acceptances are kind of mean? Really, why do they do that?

I think the waves are incredibly annoying…is it too much to ask to send all the decisions out all at once?

College admissions is so annoying :/

Hello there, trying to go through different syracuse threads…too much and too long. My question is: how is the Spring Reception and what should admitted students expect? My D got admitted and we didn’t have a chance to visit the campus but a co-worker of mine D attends and he said its big and very nice. Also, my D was invited to STEM Symposium and the One World Overnight. She was admitted to School of Arts and Sciences. Does anyone reccomend attending as well?

Appreciate any feedback.

I feel admissions is very unpredictable. I had a 3.8 weighted GPA, 1830 sat, and ranked 52 out of roughly 600 graduating students. I got accepted to Film Radio and Television!

I’m still very indecisive as they didn’t give me much FA. It would result in paying around 40k a year, which is clearly beyond what my parents can afford.

I am hoping to appeal so I can attend Syracuse. Should be a crazy contrast to SoCal, which is where I am located at.

Syracuse told my guidance counselor that the largest number of students applied to newhouse this year so they are going over the applications with a fine tooth comb so they wont submit their results with the first wave. Over 5,000 applied and only 350 are accepted!

@Manordad…As far as an ACT of 29 being too low for Newhouse, not true.
I was accepted with a 28, and that was the average last year according to my interviewer.
It’s most likely that they just didn’t have the room. If she didn’t interview that probably hurt her.
It may be worth a call. It’s possible that more spaces will open up from students who decide not to attend. I was accepted ED, but had to defer my acceptance because it was impossible for us to afford SU at the financial aid they offered. Spaces may open up, but from what I was told when I visited, they have very little room for transfers at Newhouse.
