Looking for pros and cons of both schools aside and financial coasts and weather. My daughter is an education major who is trying to decide between both schools. At Syracuse she would be enrolled in a 4 yr program graduating with a BS in Inclusive/Elementary Education and with Quinnipiac it is a 5 year program - she would graduate with a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Elementary Education. Any thoughts?? Are students happy at Syracuse?
@Actingdaughter - Students love Syracuse. Students love Quinnipiac. Has your daughter visited both schools? What were her thoughts? What are the net costs of each school and what can you afford to pay?
I echo @Themclos’s advice to visit the schools. I know kids who are happy at both. It does sound like the BA/Master’s program is a better deal, though. In MA, if you are going to be a public school teacher, you have to have a master’s degree.
Where does she want to teach? She’ll be certified to teach in NY if she chooses Syracuse and certified to teach in CT if she chooses Quinnipiac. It’s possible to achieve certification in other states, but it can be daunting and time-consuming if a graduating teacher decides he or she really wants to teach in a state other than the one in which he/she is certified.
The winter weather in Syracuse is truly awful and most years lasts 4 1/2 months (I’ve lived here since 1988 and am not exaggerating). I grew up in CT, which is not exactly heaven during wintertime but not as bad as Central New York. SU offers some very positive aspects, including an enthusiastic student body, an exciting sports scene, and loyal alums.
My first thought was Syracuse if she loves basketball and Quinnipiac if she loves hockey. That’s not helpful. Sorry.
We live quite near Quinnipiac. She would need to bring a warm winter coat, hat, gloves and I also recommend some kind of boots.
Winter lasts about 4 months here-- late November to late March. Typically we see temps in the 20s to mid-30s in winter, but it can get down into the teens and single digits for a short while.
The past 2 days we had some snowfall (unusual for April), but not enough to have to shovel-- just enough to have to clean off our cars. I read that upstate NY got 6 inches, by comparison. We got very little snow this year but that was an aberration.
