I'm from MN and wondering which school has a better reputation and which is better overall? I'm interested in studying Communications as my major. I also don't want to be completely in the middle of nowhere, so which is more central? Thanks!

I’m from Mass. and would say that our state school is excellent, especially in life sciences. However, communications is not a strong program and does not compare at all to the opportunities and reputation at Newhouse. These schools are very different and it’s an unusual comparison to make. UMass is in the western part of the state in a cultural, college town environment. SU is in urban Syracuse in upstate NY. Central to what?

To get to Umass you have to go through miles of farmland, and in the middle of no where there is the school.

The school itself has a great campus, but there is nothing (of any importance) near it.
The COM program stinks as well, it’s only print and a few other things. No studios and stuff like that.

I’m not sure about the surrounding of Syracuse (i’ve never been there), but from what admin have told me, as well as friends the Newhouse program is top notch. Probably one of the top 5 in the country.
